I’m writing to let you know about a fantastic sporting event taking place at Sainsbury’s Blackhall on Thursday 3 July to promote the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix, which takes place at Hampden Park on 12 and 13 June.

The event will see some of the world’s greatest athletes take part in the two-day competition, including double Olympic champion Mo Farah, Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford and one of the fastest men of all time, Yohan Blake. The Grand Prix is part of Sainsbury’s Summer Series, which is made up of five fantastic athlete and para-athlete events taking place across the country.

In the run-up to the Glasgow Grand Prix, we’re holding a sporting competition called ‘The Big Jump’, in four Sainsbury’s stores across Glasgow and Edinburgh. The events will see a full-size long jump track set up in our Sainsburys Blackhall car park on 3 July between 10am and 4pm. Throughout the day, we’ll be encouraging customers to take part.

Every participant will be entered into a free prize draw to win a family ticket to the Grand Prix and have the chance of taking part in a special ‘Sainsbury’s Long Jump’ event at Hampden Park on 11th July.

The event is free and it’s the first time we’ve ever held a sporting activity like this across our Scottish stores. It’s a great opportunity for children and their families to come along and be part of ‘The Big Jump’.

If you require any more details about the event, please call me on 0131 332 0704 or e-mail prl.blackhall@sainsburys.co.uk. We will also be advertising this event in-store.

Many thanks for getting involved in ‘The Big Jump’!

Sainsbury’s are Trolleywise!

WE’RE TROLLEYWISE!

Did you know that over 1.5 million shopping trolleys are abandoned each year in the UK?

To help to reduce this number, Sainsbury’s are delighted to announce that we are working with Trolleywise, a national trolley retrieval service.

Trolleywise has produced a free smartphone app, which you can use to photograph abandoned trolleys and tag their location via GPS. A team of drivers can then collect the rogue trolleys and put them back into service and cleaning up what can often be an eye sore.

Store Manager George Paton commented: “Abandoned trolleys can be a blight on our local areas as they often find their way into gardens, communal areas or even into ponds and rivers. These trolleys sometimes end up miles away from where they were taken and it can be difficult to get them back to where they belong, this will certainly make a difference.”

Sainsbury’s Blackhall raises over £7000 for Comic Relief

Susie Booth 001 (WinCE)

The money has been collected and counted – and Sainsbury’s Blackhall have today announced that their fundraising for Red Nose Day 2013 raised a magnificent £ 7,116.00!

Local residents across North Edinburgh got in the spirit by raising funds, including Sainsbury’s customers, who made a huge contribution by donating money to fundraising events at the Blackhall store as well purchasing this year’s range of merchandise including the Nose with Toes, sold in-store.

Among the fundraising highlights at the Blackhall store this year were our colleague and local resident, Susie Booth’s Sponsored Silence, at her checkout – £ 464, a Ladies Night at Silverknowes Golf Club – £ 1,042 and the Cheeky Chopstick Challenge at Blackhall and Davidson’s Mains Primary Schools – £ 606.  . Other activities which saw colleagues ‘Do Something Funny for Money’ included an in-store Zumba class.

Sainsbury’s Blackhall Store Manager David Bainbridge said: “Many of our colleagues were ‘reddy’ to go one step further this year to mark the 25th anniversary of Red Nose Day. It’s been a great experience over the last few weeks and we wouldn’t have raised this much if it wasn’t for the generous donations from our North Edinburgh customers”.

Sainsbury’s supermarkets, including North Edinburgh customers were able to do their bit for the environment too by recycling their Red Noses in-store until the end of March. Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief have partnered for a second year with leading UK carpet underlay manufacturer, Ball & Young, to recycle the PU Foam Red Noses. The collected Noses will start a new life as part of Ball & Young’s award-winning Cloud 9 range of underlays, used mainly in British homes.

Katherine How, Sainsbury’s Comic Relief Partnership Manager, added: “It’s good news for the environment and it’s helping Comic Relief supporters make an even bigger lasting impact, so thank-you to everyone who wore their Red Noses with pride and have now given them a new home”.

And good news comes in three’s – the Name the 3rd Guide Dog Puppy also raised £ 100 for Red Nose Day and £ 100 for Guide Dogs – the winner will be announced shortly!

Sainsbury’s customers serve up six thousand meals to tackle hunger

Sainsbury’s Million Meal Appeal has broken records thanks to generous donations from North West Edinburgh residents – and Granton Youth Centre will be one of the beneficiaries! On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October, customers at Sainsbury’s Blackhall donated enough food to provide 3000 meals to help feed vulnerable people affected by food poverty in the UK.  Sainsbury’s also matched every meal donated by customers, so in total 6000 meals have been donated at Blackhall store.

The Million Meal Appeal is run with Sainsbury’s charity partner FareShare, a national charity dedicated to tackling hunger and food waste

The first Million Meal Appeal was held in 2011 with 600 stores participating. Thanks to customers’ generosity and Sainsbury’s pledge to match meals, 1.2 million meals were donated to FareShare. Due to its success, this year’s appeal was run in over 900 stores.  Blackhall store were involved in both appeals and a massive two million meals have been donated in total this year, which includes matching from Sainsbury’s – that’s double the original target of 1 million meals!

Local volunteers, recruited by FareShare, leant a helping hand at the retailer’s Blackhall store over the weekend. The items collected, including tins, dried pasta, pasta sauce, rice, tea and instant coffee, are destined for local charities and projects in the surrounding community including Granton Youth Centre and Edinburgh City Mission.

Sainsbury’s Head of Community Affairs, Andy White said: “Our customers have been telling us that they like giving in this way and it’s really apparent by their generosity despite difficult times.  We’re delighted to match all the meals donated by our customers and it means that together we’re helping to provide two million meals to vulnerable members of our communities that need it the most.”

FareShare CEO Lindsay Boswell added: “The response to the Million Meal Appeal has been incredible. We’ll be able to combine the donated pasta, rice and tinned food with the short life surplus meat, fruit and vegetables that we receive daily from the food industry. It will make these surpluses go even further in a time of real need.”

Paralympic torch coming to Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s Blackhall customers will have the chance to see the Paralympic Torch as it goes on a special tour across the UK. Sainsbury’s Blackhall will welcome the torch on Friday 19 October, when customers will have the opportunity to see, hold and take photographs of the iconic torch between 1 – 3pm.

The Sainsbury’s Paralympic Torch Experience will see the Paralympic Torch travel to 400 Sainsbury’s stores across the country – the Torch’s epic journey begins at Sainsbury’s Bradford Upon-Avon and ends at the retailer’s Lampeter store on Thursday 1 November.

The Torch is one of 620 Torches used in the 24 hour Relay which took place from Stoke Mandeville in Aylesbury, the home of the Paralympic Movement, to the Olympic Park in Stratford, London on Tuesday 28th to Wednesday 29th August. 101 stores from other areas across the country previously saw the Torch ahead of and during the Games, and now the retailer –  and first ever Paralympic Games-only sponsor – is extending it to the rest of the country.

Sainsbury’s Blackhall Store Manager David Bainbridge said: “We’ve really enjoyed playing our part in raising awareness of the London 2012 Paralympic Games in Blackhall. For our customers, it’s a once in a lifetime chance for them to see the Torch and feel the buzz of the Paralympic Games, which we’re proud to have sponsored.”

The local Sainsbury’s store is also responsible for another Olympic legacy, with two local high schools sharing in the success of the 2012 games thanks to donations from Sainsbury’s. The Royal High School received a donation of London 2012 sports clothing which they aim to use for team events, and organisers of Broughton High School’s recent Septemberfest were delighted to use Sainsbury’s London 2012 merchandise for prizes.

The store hope the donation will help maintain the positive momentum and feeling created by the London 2012 Games. Sainsbury’s Blackhall Store Manager David Bainbridge said: “Our colleagues and customers have really got behind all Paralympics GB and Team GB athletes and we wanted to celebrate the success of the London 2012 Games by providing The Royal High School and Septemberfest with a lasting memento of what has truly been a year like no other.”
