Corstorphine Community Centre now in community ownership

STATEMENT FROM THE CHAIR AND MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The Management Committee of C. C. C. (Corstorphine Community Centre) is delighted to announce that The Hub (formerly Westfield House) on Kirk Loan is now in community ownership.

Negotiations with the City of Edinburgh Council for the purchase of the building and grounds have been successfully completed, and the building became the property of C. C. C. on 20th February 2024.

It has been a long journey to secure a new home for a community centre in the heart of Corstorphine, following the fire in 2013 which devastated the Public Hall.

We are more than grateful to the individuals and organisations who have got us to this point, offering invaluable expertise and time, and raising and awarding funding over the 10 plus years it has taken.

We now have a building, situated in the heart of Corstorphine which will be devoted to promoting community wellbeing and activities.

We will do this by being the home for organisations needing a local base, by delivering a growing programme of activities in-house, by providing letting space for groups and organisations to deliver their activities within Corstorphine, and by offering space for events.

The next big task, so that this all becomes a reality, is to make the building fit for purpose by ensuring it is fully accessible, inviting to use, and environmentally sound. It will be a major works programme and plans are already in the making.

We want to ensure that the end result is a community centre for the 21st century, with a viable business model, which serves and enhances life for folk in our community.

Westfield House is new home for Corstorphine Community Centre

The Management Committee and staff of Corstorphine Community CCC are delighted to confirm that as from Monday 20th June, their new base will be at Westfield House, 5 Kirk Loan, Corstorphine, opposite the Astoria Hall.

We are continuing to pursue the option of a Community Asset Transfer in order than we can occupy the premises on a permanent basis.

We are in the midst of organising the new building and it is planned that activities / groups will recommence from 4th July with the shop operating from the ground floor of the building.

Future Premises: A statement from Corstorphine Community Centre

STATEMENT ON FUTURE PREMISES FOR CCC (2nd February 2022)

Since the disastrous fire in 2013, we have been looking to rebuild the former Corstorphine Public Hall at Kirk Loan. 

We have made considerable efforts, with success, to modernise our governance structure to facilitate this, trusting it would then enable us to access the required funds as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) which owns and runs a Community Facility for the area.

A Lottery Fund application was applauded, but no funds were granted and as you may be aware the CCC has over the past few years received indications of funding options on a number of occasions by the City of Edinburgh Council but has not been allocated anything towards the approved project to rebuild on the original Public Hall site.

Strenuous efforts have been made over a number of years to secure the funds to make that project possible but without success. Our current lease at St John’s road will be coming to an end shortly, leaving us nowhere to run all our current and successful community groups and services.

After much serious consideration and research, CCC has now started the proceedings for a Community Asset Transfer (CAT) of Westfield House in Corstorphine, the former city council office building, also situated in Kirk Loan

Our intention is to adapt the current building to create the required community centre. The CAT presents an opportunity to provide even more services and activities for the local community. It is also anticipated that external funding for this project will be available from the Scottish Land Trust.

In addition to our existing cash reserves and all donations received, the original site at Kirk Loan has a value and although somewhat reluctantly, it is our intention that the site will shortly be marketed for sale; this will provide funds to be used solely for the provision of the new community centre for Corstorphine.
