Forth celebrates International Women’s Day with interviews with leading Scottish women

Forth 1 and Forth 2 presenter, Cat Harvey, is joined by inspirational Scottish women this International Women’s Day (Monday 8th March), to discuss their successes, challenges and aspirations.

The women, including Judy Murray, sports presenter Eilidh Barbour and woman’s rights campaigner Talat Yaqoob, each at the top of their chosen field, all share personal experiences of breaking through the glass ceiling and stories of their own accomplishments.

The interviews, conducted by breakfast presenter Cat Harvey, one of Scotland’s top female radio talents, will be played out on Forth 1 and Forth 2 and across the Hits Radio and Greatest Hits Networks on Monday, interspersed with a playlist that will be all female artists, all day (Forth 1, 6am to midnight), including the likes of Beyonce, Amy MacDonald, Lizzo, Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Adele and Pink.

Scottish business and beauty mogul, Jamie Genevieve, shares her story on Forth 1. She discusses the ‘cookie cutter’ image of women in business and how she discovered the power of being herself and the success this has brought her.

Eilidh Barbour and Cat discuss the success of women’s football in recent years and Eilidh speaks about how she has made her own voice heard amongst her male colleagues’, while Talat Yaqoob discusses the challenges women still face in trying to break into certain industries.

Judy Murray said: “A lot of the situations I’ve faced [in the sporting industry] have made me…create the female only organisations…I understand how much more you can get out of women and girls when they feel comfortable and relaxed.”

Cat Harvey, presenter of Ewen & Cat At Breakfast on Forth 2, said: “It was extremely empowering speaking to these amazing women across a variety of professions about their achievements and their journey to get to where they are now.

“It’s so important that we continue to have these conversations. We have made progress in the past few years for gender equality, but it is essential that we keep pushing and challenging the status quo, and I’m proud to a play a part in making sure women’s voices are being heard.”

Cash prizes will be given out across the network until the £1 million prize pot has been emptied. Afternoon presenter on Forth 1, Garry Spence, is looking forward to sharing the amazing amount of money with his listeners. He said: “Playing Cash Register with listeners is by far my favourite competition – it’s so simple to play yet can impact someone’s lives in a way that’s hard to imagine.

“The best part is telling people they have won – there is no greater feeling, and with £1 million to give away it’s going to feel even better. I know from speaking to listeners that the prizes on Cash Register can quite literally change people’s lives, and after such a challenging year, we all need these feel-good moments more than ever.”

Shop local at Edinburgh’s Christmas Neighbourhood Market

Edinburgh’s local businesses will be the focus of a new online campaign and virtual shop window in a new online neighbourhood market.

From today, a sign up portal on www.edinburghschristmas.com will open for local, independent businesses to enter their information to be part of the Edinburgh’s Christmas Neighbourhood Market.

The Market is expected to showcase artisan producers, makers, local retailers, bakers, gift companies, accessory and clothing businesses, hotels and restaurants – putting the focus on supporting and celebrating local, independent businesses and will open to customers on 19 November.

The Market is entirely free to sign up to. It will act as a directory to direct people to a fantastic range of local suppliers where they can purchase and interact on the supplier’s own site.

Throughout the campaign, the neighbourhood market will put a spotlight on a range of selected local businesses each day, showcasing the wealth of product and produce on offer in Edinburgh.

In addition to featuring on the Edinburgh’s Christmas website, the promotion and marketing support will extend to the official Edinburgh’s Christmas channels. These include 126,000 followers on Facebook, 9,300 on Instagram and 13,300 on Twitter.

The platform will also highlight activity that is already happening in the city, with information and a location map highlighting each of the local farmers markets in the city.

Ashley Harley, Events Manager at Mimi’s Bakehouse said“We have always loved being part of Edinburgh Christmas and as a local Edinburgh business we love helping to ensure there is local presence so this digital platform is such a fantastic idea.

“Giving Edinburgh businesses a chance to showcase the amazing gifts, produce, food and drink the city has to offer and utilise to Edinburgh Christmas platform will be sure to generate some sales at a time when the retail and food and drink has taken a real blow. We encourage everyone to shop local this year and support your independents whilst having a safe and happy Christmas.”

Ruth Fisher, Producer of Edinburgh’s Christmas for Underbelly, said: “Edinburgh’s Christmas is a hugely important event for the city and this year’s digital programme has been designed to put Edinburgh’s residents and businesses first.

“The new Christmas Neighbourhood Market is designed to shine a spotlight on the wealth of products and produce that we have here in Edinburgh and encourage residents to shop locally this Christmas.

“As a key worker, Santa is very much at the heart of our plans.  We look forward to reading the story submissions and working with Santa and his elves to produce a great series of Advent Stories.  In what has been an unprecedented year for Edinburgh, we hope that the Edinburgh’s Christmas programme brings some cheer and enjoyment to everyone this festive season.”

Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Frank Ross said: “The festive season is a very special time for our city and our communities and, as Edinburgh’s Christmas goes digital this year, our residents and local businesses will be at the heart of it all.

“What an honour to have Santa Claus himself reading bedtime stories every night leading up to the big day!

“The new online Neighbourhood Market promises to be an exciting and convenient outlet for Christmas shopping and a fantastic opportunity for local businesses of all kinds. This year, more than ever, it’s essential to support our local businesses and through the Neighbourhood Market we can do this while at the same time staying safe and having some festive fun.

“I’m glad that although we can’t be together at our usual popular events this year, this digital programme ensures that the Capital will still have plenty of Christmas spirit.”

Boogie, Presenter of Forth 1’s Boogie In The Morning show said: “Forth 1 has worked with Edinburgh’s Christmas & Hogmanay for many years so we are delighted to be involved in Santa’s Advent Stories.

“We all know that Christmas could be very different this year so anything at all that Arlene and I can do to help bring some festive cheer to the fantastic people of Edinburgh and beyond, then we are very keen to support it where we can. We love the Santa’s Advent Stories idea!”

Schools Out for Summer with Forth 1

Forth 1 DJs, Callum Gallacher and Boogie, are celebrating the end of what has been an unusual school term with the ultimate Schools Out for Summer parties.

There’s no doubt that the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we learn, work and socialise, but the Forth 1 DJs are refusing to let it change the way we see in the school summer holidays while raising funds for Cash for Kids.

Pupils and listeners across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and Falkirk will be treated to playlists curated especially by DJ Callum Gallacher and Boogie In the Morning DJ, Boogie, to get the summer vibes started as schools across Scotland break up for the end of term.

Last night, with so many young people across the country unable to mark the occasion with friends and teachers, pupils had the chance to join Callum Gallacher’s Summer Prom – and the partying continues today with Boogie’s Summer Party via Facebook Live from 3pm.

Listeners are encouraged to tune in to the special shows to hear their favourite summer tunes and the biggest hits, while at the same time having the chance to give shout outs to their friends, school mates and teachers. There will also be an opportunity to donate to Cash For Kids.

Callum Gallacher hosted a School Prom with guest mixes from Friday night GBXperience DJ, George Bowie and Saturday Night Anthems presenter, Garry Spence, from 7pm, for pupils across the country who are finishing up for the summer with no school prom.

Callum said: “It’s particularly hard for pupils who are finishing up their school careers, knowing that it’s unlikely they’ll have the chance to say a proper goodbye at the end of this very unusual school term.

“There’ll be no shirt signing, no ties on heads, no school prom – we feel for them – so we want to make sure we give them a great night.”

Following the School Prom, listeners can join Boogie on Facebook Live from 3pm today. Boogie In The Morning presenter, Boogie, said: “The last day of school was always the most fun, so we want to make sure pupils across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and Falkirk aren’t missing out.

“There’s no denying that lockdown has been tough for many young people and at Forth 1 we are trying to bring some sense of normality to our listeners with music, a laugh and a fair bit of daftness! I’m really looking forward to this continuing with our end of term Summer Party!”

Join Boogie from 3pm on Facebook Live today. Get in touch with  via the Forth 1 Facebook page with your song requests and shout outs to your friends, school and teachers. Find out more about the Schools Out For Summer party here.

FORTH 1 listeners lift spirits with ‘Stay Home Orchestra’

Forth 1 listeners have been staying home and staying upbeat while creating their own mass version of club classic ‘Carnaval De Paris’ by Dario G.

The Boogie In The Morning breakfast team, consisting of Boogie, Arlene and Marty, have been encouraging listeners of all musical talents from across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife  and Falkirk to get involved in the ultimate ‘Stay at Home Orchestra’ which went live yesterday (Tuesday 28th April).

Otherwise known as the ‘Working From Home Amateur Massive Musical Orchestra (WHAMMO), listeners from across the east of Scotland were keeping themselves occupied during this period of isolation by filming themselves playing along to the song which was originally recorded for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

Speaking about WHAMMO, Boogie, who hosts Forth 1’s Boogie In The Morning, said: “We all know how important it is to stay at home at the moment to protect our NHS and save lives. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun.

“We’re all in this together and we were not let down by the fantastic response we had from our listeners.

“I was really impressed with the musical talents and creativity of the entries – they definitely showed me and the rest of the team up…apart from Arlene, who was annoyingly, really quite good!”

You can check out the full ‘Stay At Home Orchestra’ video on the Radio Forth WHAMMO webpage now.

A message from Cat Harvey

I’m Cat Harvey and I wanted to write and let you know that from Monday 27th April, I am hosting a brand new show in association with the Scottish Government all about YOU!

Join me three times a day, morning afternoon and evening, where we will look at different ways of taking care of ourselves and our loved ones as we continue to spend more time at home.

So what would you like to hear about? Would you like some top tips on setting a routine, clearing your head, moving more or learning how to properly switch off? What about home schooling, cooking, gardening or how to get Granny on Houseparty? Let me know what YOU want to know… and I’ll do my best to find some answers.

I would also love to hear and share your uplifting stories through these tricky times: it could be a neighbour who has been an absolute star, a community pulling together, family fun, businesses going above and beyond or essential workers making you proud from your posties to care workers and teachers and all those in the food supply chain.

Get in touch and share your story with me and I’ll share as many as I can across the nation.

Catch-up with Cat, on-air from Monday in association with the Scottish Government – be part of it on the Forth 1 website.

Good Friday’s a great Friday for Sheelagh

It certainly was a ‘Good Friday’ for Sheelagh Robertson of Tranent when she won £10,000 on Cash Register on Forth 1.

Sheelagh, a retired NHS cook, was one of the ten lucky people who won a share of £100,000 after texting into the special Easter competition.

Sheelagh said: “I can’t believe I actually won and like many people this money will come in handy at this time.  My son, David, is a self-employed joiner so he is currently out of work so I plan to give him half the money to help him get through this uncertain time.

“I will spend the other £5,000 on my garden as I recently got a conservatory fitted and that will mean the garden can be ready for any sunny weather ahead.”

Presenter, Grant Thomson, said: “This was a very special Cash Register and it was brilliant to be able to give 10 different people a share of £100,000. This is a difficult time for everyone and we are delighted that we have been able to help Sheelagh and her family make Good Friday into a great Friday.”
