Young Scot to stage Olympics at Craigroyston!

Young Scot Youth Legacy Ambassador Bina Radhi is hosting an Olympic-themed day at Craigroyston Primary School next month.

Bina, who is 18, explained “On 11 May, myself and Jodi, another YLA from Edinburgh, will be hosting an Olympic themed sports day at Craigroyston Primary School for the primary sevens who are in transition to moving to high school. Since it’s the year of the Olympics, we have decided to host an Olympic themed day, by allocating each class with an Olympic country for the chance to compete against one another. There will be a mixture of different stations, from trying out sports such as football, javelin throw, as well as educational activities, where pupils will have to test their knowledge and learn some fast facts about each country!”

She went on: “As it is a transaction event, we have been working closely with the Active Schools Coordinator to invite other cluster primary schools in the area to come along, so that they can meet other young people that they will be going to high school with. Since then, we have had confirmation for a couple of schools to say they are coming. We also have all equipment, photographer, music, some media, sponsorship money (hopefully), all organised for the day! The event is on the 11th of May and will run from 9.30- 11.30am. We hope to see around 120 pupils come along and have already recruited around 30 volunteers.”

Sounds like a lot of fun!

Friends reunite for Craigroyston farewell

Craigroyston Primary School teacher Barbara Wilson retired last week after a teaching career in North Edinburgh that spanned 39 years! Barbara taught at Silverknowes for 29 years before moving on to the new Craigroyston when it opened in 2003.

Craigroyston Primary School held a special assembly to thank and say goodbye to the popular teacher before breaking up for the Easter holidays.

Barbara was joined on her special day by friend and former colleague Moira Moyes, who retired from Craigroyston just eight weeks ago.  Barbara and Moira became friends when they studied to become teachers, graduating in 1973. Barbara went on to teach at Silverknowes while Moira taught at nearby Muirhouse, but the friends were reunited when the schools merged to form the new Craigroyston in 2003.

Over all those years Barbara and Moira taught and nurtured hundreds of local schoolchildren, although Barbara did point out that Moira did take off a couple of years to have a family so she’s still basically a novice!

Barbara (left) and Moira are pictured with Craigroyston pupils who helped to make the assembly extra special.

Craigroyston Primary’s art exhibition opens in Stockbridge

Craigroyston Primary School’s ‘Leapers and Creepers’ art exhibition opened in the WASPS Gallery off Hamilton Place in Stockbridge yesterday. Celebrated local artist Joyce Gunn Cairns and local musician John Sampson (pictured below) opened the event and the quality of art on display is as high as ever.

Craigroyston Primary’s Helen Cameron was one of the main organisers of the event. She explained: “Our pupils’ annual Art Exhibition is always a popular event with parents and pupils. Everyone in the local community is invited along to see the displays of colourful and imaginative work – paintings, models, marbling, chalk, charcoal, inks, watercolours, prints, clay, drawing, felting, collage – an incredible array of media, styles and subjects.  This year Joyce Gunn Cairns MBE has generously arranged for us to use gallery space at the WASPS studios in Stockbridge and we are delighted to be able to showcase the children’s work there. It’s very exciting for the children to be exhibiting in a gallery area and to see their work in a different setting outwith the school”.

Craigroyston’s ‘Leapers and Creepers’ exhibition is open daily from 12 – 3pm until 1 April. Don’t miss it!

Local pupils to produce BBC documentaries

Screen Education Edinburgh (formerly Pilton Video) has been working in partnership with BBC on a film project with local young people. The project will give the pupils a taste of film-making and their work will be shown by the BBC.
The initiative, a partnership between Screen Education Edinburgh and BBC Scotland, will see pupils from Craigroyston Primary, Craigroyston High School and Castlebrae High School learn to produce a five minute documentary film each to be broadcast on the BBC’s website next month.
Graham Fitzpatrick, Screen Education Edinburgh’s  Creative Manager, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils in Edinburgh to learn how to produce their own documentaries. The topics they have chosen are very current – Global Citizenship, Literacy and Olympic Values – and we can’t wait to see the  final results. Our aim is to unearth untapped                  creativity in young people, giving them the knowledge and skills to pursue a lifelong interest in film-making.”

Leapers and Creepers! Craigroyston’s art exhibition is moving!

Craigroyston Primary School’s annual art exhibition is one of the highlights of the school calendar, and this year the childrens’ remarkable artwork will be seen by an even wider audience – it’s being displayed in a Stockbridge art gallery!

Craigroyston Head Teacher Lorna Stewart explained: “Every year we celebrate our pupils’ work with an Art Exhibition where every child has work exhibited.  We invite parents and carers, other professionals and visitors who have worked with the children as well as prominent local people. This year, thanks to the support of Joyce Gunn Cairns MBE, we are fortunate to be able to exhibit in the WASPS Gallery where Joyce has her studio.  We are also grateful to Joyce for arranging for musician John Sampson to open the exhibition for us.”

She continued: “We are very pleased and excited at the prospect of using this space and it will be an excellent opportunity for the children to have their achievements celebrated and recognised beyond their immediate community.”

This year’s theme is ‘Leapers and Creepers’ and the exhibition opens at the WASPS Studios in Hamilton Place on Friday 23 March at 4pm.  Don’t miss it!
