‘Monumental collision of live music and painting’ in a first for Edinburgh Art Fair

SHAMANIC Live at the Edinburgh Art Fair

Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 November, 2pm

The Corn Exchange, New Market Rd, EH14 1RJ

Edinburgh Art Fair, celebrating its 15th year, has teamed up with SHAMANIC – the collective which features acclaimed Russian artist Maria Rud, iconic punk rock legend, Fay Fife of the Rezillos and Martin Metcalfe, the frontman of Goodbye Mr Mackenzie & The Filthy Tongues – to feature two live performances, a unique first for the event.

SHAMANIC is a unique, dramatic, visceral collision of live music and painting, created by Russian artist Maria Rud (a development of her AniMotion Shows with Evelyn Glennie (which toured to USA, China and Europe)), iconic Rezillos frontwoman Fay Fife and Martin Metcalfe (Filthy Tongues/Goodbye Mr McKenzie/Angelfish).

SHAMANIC is the fruit of the creative friendship between Fay Fife and Maria Rud, taking the AniMotion Show into the realm of rock ‘n’ roll, in which one member of the band is a painter. The SHAMANIC collective shares Edinburgh Art Fair’s belief that art is for everyone.

The band delivers an unforgettable live experience in which music and painting become one in a psychedelic cinematic performance.

Projected live, Maria’s iconic ever-changing imagery fused with music is akin to a live animated film. SHAMANIC was launched in the Old College Quad in Edinburgh in association with Rip It Up by the National Museum Of Scotland.

Hailed as a “multimedia spectacular” by the Herald, and raved about by its audiences, SHAMANIC is headed overseas in 2020, to Austin, Texas, where it will be showcased at the legendary South By South West Festival.

The unique collaboration between Edinburgh Art Fair and SHAMANIC aims to show that art & music belong to the same sphere and to bring visitors closer to art. The collaboration with Edinburgh Art Fair is a natural partnership which will demonstrate that fine art can be perceived in an immersive and accessible way.

Maria Rud  and sculptor Ewan Allinson – artistic director of The AniMotion Show – co-founded DOM which for nearly a decade maintained a public gallery in Edinburgh’s Advocate’s Close. DOM’s main aim was to reunite music & art and make them accessible to all.

Alongside live performances, the SHAMANIC collective will be presented by Edinburgh Art Fair at the specially curated stand.

As well as Maria Rud’s paintings and Ewan Allinson’s sculptures, the stand will feature works by musicians Martin Metcalfe and Derek Kelly ( Goodbye Mr Mackenzie /The Filthy Tongues), both practising visual artists, which further emphasises the point of art & music being inseparably linked.

The SHAMANIC performances are free to anyone attending the Edinburgh Art Fair; free tickets specifically for the SHAMANIC performance can also be ordered by emailing EAFShamanic@gmail.com
