for new edition of

Shafted: The Media, the Miners’ Strike and the Aftermath

The first edition of Shafted was published on the 25th anniversary of the miners’ strike. So much has happened over the last decade: cabinet paper revelations on the government’s role in the strike; the establishment of the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign; and a renewed interest in the Women Against Pit Closures pit camps set up in the wake of the October 1992 announcement of 31 pits closing with the loss of 31,000 jobs.

Come along to hear from people who have contributed to this new edition.

Speakers:

Nicholas Jones, former BBC Industrial Correspondent, who will discuss his chapter “Prising open hidden secrets of the pit strike”, discuss media representation generally and Scotland’s role in the Miners’ strike.

Granville Williams edited both editions of Shafted. He is the coordinator of CPBF (North) and editor of MediaNorth.

Morag Livingstone, film maker, best selling author and investigative journalist who contributed a chapter: “When the long arm of the law overreaches”

Chair: Joyce McMillan, theatre critic, social and political commentator. Chair of the National Union of Journalist (NUJ) Edinburgh Freelance Branch, NUJ’s National Executive Committee and the Freelance Industrial Council.
