Edinburgh College to open its doors for Granton Community Day

Edinburgh College will welcome the wider community to its Granton Campus next Saturday – 1st June – as its hosts Granton Community Day for the second time.

Members of the surrounding community are invited to drop-in from 12 – 3pm on the day to take part in a range of activities, speak to the various organisations hosting information stalls and enjoy a variety of refreshments – all of which are free.

Following on from the successful event held in May last year last year, the College is hosting the event to help raise awareness of local support networks across the area, and showcase all that the College has to offer.

Activities on the day include: Art in the Open run by the National Galleries of Scotland where event goers can try their hand at painting; some running ball drills facilitated by Edinburgh-based Heriot’s Rugby Club; and a kids activity zone featuring face painting and colouring in.

Guests will also have the opportunity to explore the inside of a fire engine which has been provided by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for the day.

Organisations including Girlguiding Scotland, North Edinburgh Arts, Waterfront Nursery, Destiny Church, Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue service will also be hosting information stalls on the day.

There will be a chance to explore facets of the College’s curriculum offering by having a go on a virtual welding simulator, talking to the Sustainability team about the College’s Community garden projects, watching demonstrations from Elite Dance Studio lecturers, and sample homemade sweet treats made by our Professional Cookery and Bakery students.

Student music groups will also be playing throughout the day.

In addition, the City of Edinburgh Council will be in attendance to hear views and provide updates on the work of the Granton Waterfront Development.

Edinburgh College Principal Audrey Cumberford said: “We’re very excited to be welcoming the local community back to Granton Campus for our second Community Event.

“It promises to be a wonderful occasion, building on the success of last year’s event. There are lots of activities planned so that all of the family can enjoy the day and it is sure to be a great day out for the whole family.

“The event provides a brilliant opportunity to find out more about the College, which is on the doorstep of so many, to have fun and to find out more about the ongoing Granton Waterfront Development – a vital regeneration programme for the area.”
