Creative Industries Employability Day at Edinburgh College

Creative Industries students get tips from industry experts

Edinburgh College’s students gained insight into what it takes to make it in the creative industries as the College hosted some of the country’s top professionals at its sixth annual Creative Industries Employability Day.

Students from the College’s Creative Industries courses attended the event at its Granton Campus where they had an opportunity to get career advice from guest speakers from across the creative sector including experts in film and television, music, photography, fashion, computing, performing arts and more.

More than 600 students were inspired by workshops delivered by 70 industry panellists who gave students their top tips on making the most of their talent, standing out in the industry, and building successful careers.

The workshops were provided by the likes of the National Theatre of Scotland, Be Fab Be Creative, Young Enterprise Scotland, Radio Forth, Festival Fringe Society, Business Gateway, DF Concerts and Strange Town Theatre.

NC Broadcast Media student Lewis Blackhall said: “My favourite part of the day was the talk on audio visual and events production. The speaker was really good and didn’t spend too long talking about who he was and who he worked for, he provided useful information and was very engaging.”

Edinburgh College head of Creative Industries Jakki Jeffery said: “This is the sixth year we have run the Employability Day and the variety of speakers get better every year!

“The event is not only a great opportunity for our students to speak to people currently working in the industry, but they can also get live jobs from some of the employers attending. I can’t wait for next year already!”

Imaginate producer and industry panellist Pamela Walker said: “I really enjoyed coming in today to sit on the panel alongside some very creative people and speak to Edinburgh College students.

“During the discussion we were able to give the students an insight into employability in the creative industries and they were really engaged, asking some interesting questions.”
