Edinburgh’s Equality and Rights Network (EaRN) are holding a free event on Saturday 10 February, from 2-4pm at Norton Park Conference Centre. Breaking Down Barriers: Disability, Visibility, Accessibility will be a fun-filled afternoon of poetry, song, music, dance and film aiming to give those who face barriers to access in Edinburgh an opportunity to tell their stories, how they want to tell them.
Performances will include poetry from Lindsay Oliver, award winning film Buggy Off by Karen Sutherland and a wheelchair dance by our own volunteer Equalities Ambassador, and event organiser, Nada Shawa. Various organisations will be also represented on the day including Euan’s Guide, Neatebox, People First (Scotland), get2gether, and Wee Red UpCycles. There will also be time for discussion, allowing EaRN to gather feedback on what attendees think are the issues that matter the most.
Caroline Gibb, EaRN Development Worker, commented: “We wanted to take a creative approach to exploring disability, visibility and accessibility, and are delighted to give this platform to people who have faced different kinds of barriers in their life.
“As a project our focus is finding ways for voices to be heard. Events like this can really make people stop and re-assess how access issues affect everyone and what changes need to be made.”
This event is part of EaRN’s ongoing programme of work to engage the people of Edinburgh in advancing equality, promoting human rights, and tackling inequality and poverty. By raising awareness of these important issues, and allowing individuals affected to have their own voices heard, we hope to make a positive difference to the city as a whole.
