EDINBURGH Napier Knights will clash with Glasgow University Tigers in a gridiron spectacular just hours before Super Bowl 2018.
The East-West American Football showpiece at the capital’s Meggetland stadium tomorrow replaces the traditional annual varsity derby against Edinburgh University, following the Knights’ promotion to a higher division.
The inaugural inter-city match – accompanied by a full programme of family entertainment – will see the teams compete for a new trophy donated by MacKenzie’s Catering.
Edinburgh Napier Knights’ head coach Pete Laird said: “We hope the first East-West game will contain similar thrills and excitement to the traditional all-Edinburgh Super Bowl appetiser against our friends from Edinburgh University.
“Sunday is the biggest day for exposure to American Football in the UK, and a fixture between ourselves and our Glasgow division rivals is sure to whet fans’ appetite for the big match between New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles in Minneapolis later in the day. Spectators are encouraged to wear their university colours and to make as much noise as they possibly can!”
Entry to Meggetland is free for Under 16s and discounted for students, and entertainment will be provided by live music, a DJ and the Edinburgh Napier Panthers Cheer Squad. The home team’s university alumni association will host a VIP lounge, and the Knights’ youth team, aged 11 to 16, will play a demonstration game during the half-time interval.
Gates open from 1pm in advance of the 2.30pm kick-off, and fans will be able to enjoy hot food, a barbeque and drinks at the clubhouse bar. Tickets are £5 for an adult and £2.50 for students, and can be purchased in advance or on the gate.
Match tickets also include entry to the Knights’ Super Bowl party at the Three Sisters pub in the capital’s Cowgate from 8pm on Sunday.
