A group of Edinburgh College students have been busy stuffing stockings full of gifts to deliver to local children in time for Christmas. The Entry to Learning students undertook The Great Stocking Stuff in aid of Children 1st Hardengreen to provide gifts to local children who may otherwise receive very little at Christmas time.
As part of their course, seven students were tasked with tackling social issues in the UK and came up with The Great Stocking Stuff as a way of bringing joy to children over the festive period.
The project enabled students to develop skills in team working, problem solving, time management, communication and market research. The students researched local charities and looked at how they could help make a difference to children in the local area.
Students received donations from staff and students at Edinburgh College and the project was supported by local supermarkets Tesco (Hardengreen), Morrisons (Dalkeith) and Sainsbury’s (Straiton) which donated an abundance of gifts from their stores. Sainsbury’s donated more than £500-worth of gifts.
Donated gifts included toys, colouring books, confectionery, toiletries, teddies, selection boxes, books and puzzles.
Edinburgh College lecturer Jasmine Lapointe said: “The students have excelled themselves in their work to gather as many donations as possible for a worthy cause. From writing letters to local supermarkets asking for support with their project to designing posters to display around the college’s campuses – they have done a fantastic job. The students should be so proud of what they have achieved and I hope their stockings help to make Christmas that little bit more magical for the children who receive them.”
Children 1st family support worker Lorraine Mackie said: “It is overwhelming to see the amount of gifts the students have collected. We support many families who have experienced issues with poverty, poor mental health, alcohol or drug misuse, loss or conflict and the stockings will make a big difference to these families at Christmas time. Well done to the students on their fantastic effort.”
