Local MSP goes on patrol and hails Operation Myriad success

Impressive results following two week crime blitz

Edinburgh Northern and Leith MSP went on patrol with North West area commander Chief Inspector Stevie Sutherland on Friday to see first-hand the efforts being made to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour in North Edinburgh through the Operation Myriad initiative. Fifty-three people were arrested during the crime crackdown, and both the police officer and the local politician thanked the local community for their support throughout the campaign.

The weekend marked the end of Operation Myriad, and final figures were released yesterday. The two-week initiative saw 53 people arrested, charged or reported to the PF for various offences.  Thirteen misuse of drugs warrants were executed recovering heroin, cocaine and cannabis with a combined value in excess of £26,500. Police also recovered proceeds of crime cash totalling almost £9,000 as well as 13 pedal cycles, stolen electrical equipment, and several stolen motorcycles as a result of warrants and patrols.

Working alongside City of Edinburgh Council and DVLA, 28 vehicles were clamped and at least seven uplifted for road traffic offences during the two week campaign.

North West Area Commander Chief Inspector Stevie Sutherland explained: “This was an opportunity to showcase  the work Operation Myriad officers have been doing to tackle antisocial behaviour and violence in North West Edinburgh.

“Over the two weeks of the operation we have employed a range of tactics involving officers from local and national resources delivering results which will have a lasting positive impact on local communities.

“Officers have arrested or charged individuals involved in serious criminality, worked with a range of partners to improve the local area and delivered crime prevention and safety talks to local schools and community groups.

“Local officers will maintain a high visibility presence in the local area and I encourage anyone with information that can assist us to speak to an officer, call, or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Edinburgh Northern and Leith MSP Ben Macpherson said: “It’s been great to learn more about the impact Operation Myriad is having in North Edinburgh.

“Over the last couple of weeks there has been an enhanced police presence and a range of measures have been undertaken to tackle antisocial behaviour and criminality perpetrated by a small minority in North Edinburgh. It’s reassuring to see that this police action is making a meaningful difference in the community.

“The many arrests that have been made, the significant seizure of drugs and proceeds of crime and the recovery of stolen property are all testament to the combined effort of the police resources involved – and the operation is a highly positive example of partnership working.

“It’s very encouraging to see what Operation Myriad has achieved and my thanks go out to all of the police officers who have been working solidly to apprehend perpetrators of motorcycle crime and other offences. I would also like to say thank you to all of those in the community who have passed information on to the police – this increasing flow of information is really important and it’s making a big difference,

“I applaud everyone who has taken the time, and had the courage, to make a call or speak to a police officer to make that difference – please keep doing so.”
