ParkLife: Breathing new life into West Pilton Park

West Pilton’s Parklife group had much to celebrate at this month’s annual general meeting – the group’s first. They now hope to build on successful events by encouraging more local people to get involved.

Parklife – formerly the West Pilton Park Action Group – was only officially formed in June last year. Supported by Pilton Community Health Project, Community Action North (CAN) and Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust, the group produced a plan to revitalise the green space and went on to organise three successful events: a Family Fun Day in July last year, a Halloween Spooktacular in October and followed these up with an Easter Eggstravaganza this April.

New chairperson Ally Stuart told the 6 September meeting in West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre: “Our organisation has only been going for a short time but we have already achieved quite a lot in that time. We are learning as we go along and we would really love to get more people involved to help us plan further events and activities.”

Edinburgh & Lothian Greenspace Trust’s Richard Darke gave a presentation on ELGT’s involvement in progress at the park thus far and outlined plans to engage local schools when 27 new trees are planted in November.

Secretary Sandra Marshall said: “Quite a lot has happened already, with clean ups, bulb planting and new benches going in as well as fun community events that were attended by hundreds of people. There are lots of things going on and we are planning others – another Halloween event with West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre, for example.

“There is a lot to do, and the more help we get the more events we can put on. We would appeal to everyone: come aboard, get involved – help us and help your community.”

ParkLife’s next meeting is on Wednesday 18th October from 4.30 – 5.30pm in West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre. All welcome.
