Latest figures released by the Scottish Government have shown that numbers of Edinburgh’s school leavers are going on to positive destinations.
In 2015-16, 93.7% went onto positive destinations after leaving school in Edinburgh – an increase of 4.9% since 2011-12. The figures also showed that 39% of leavers went into higher education, whilst 23% went into employment in 2015-16.
The SNP Government has made education its number one priority in this parliament and says it is committed to improving education standards in our schools and giving our young people the best opportunities in life.
SNP MSP for Edinburgh Northern and Leith, Ben Macpherson said: “The Scottish Government is committed to continually improving standards in our schools and to ensuring that young people have opportunities to go on to work, education or training, and make the best start in adult life.
“Our schools across Edinburgh are benefitting from this commitment from the Scottish Government and additional spending in the budget, together with funding to close the attainment gap, will go further still towards helping more young people from Edinburgh find positive destinations after leaving school.
“I’m delighted to see that 93.7% of school leavers in our city are going on to positive destinations after leaving school, such as employment, training, university or college. This demonstrates the real progress that the Scottish Government is making in order to give young people across our country the best start in life.”
The city council’s Vice-Convenor of Education, SNP Councillor for Sighthill/Gorgie, Catherine Fullerton said: “It is wonderful to see the increase in the number of school leavers continuing their education, training and jobs.
“The Scottish Government are continually investing in education and ensuring that it is kept high on the agenda – a great investment in the future of Edinburgh, and Scotland.”
