Local familes had an added bonus to their holidays this year thanks to a new initiative by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) Edinburgh Zoo.
Children and families from Barnardo’s Edinburgh Community Support Service enjoyed days out at the RZSS Edinburgh Zoo with no charge, as part of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) ‘Wild About Scotland’ programme supported by Clydesdale Bank.
The initiative and partnership has given children and families across Scotland, supported by the children’s charity, the opportunity to visit both of the zoological parks and find out about the natural world that surrounds them.
Families were delighted to have the opportunity to visit the zoo saying ‘We really enjoyed seeing the Panda and not even the rain spoiled the day’. ‘We went to the zoo, before going back to school – it was a fantastic day.’
Martin Crewe, Director of Barnardo’s Scotland said: “We’re very pleased to be working in collaboration with RZSS and Clydesdale Bank. For some of the families and young people we support, a visit to the Zoo may not be a treat they would normally consider. By giving children a chance to see the animals, they experience the wonder of the natural world and gain an insight into the importance of conservation.”
Wild about Scotland aims to educate the next generation of conservationists about the importance of Scottish wildlife for everyone, teaching them about native species, their habitats and environments and what they can do to protect them. The project also aims to connect people with the natural biodiversity surrounding them.
Martin added: “I would like to thank RZSS and Clydesdale bank on behalf of the charity and all of the families who have visited the parks so far.”
