Royston/Wardieburn Adult summer programme kicked off on Tuesday with a visit to the Scottish Parliament. After viewing the World Press Photo exhibition by the world’s leading photo journalists*, participants had a meeting with Ben MacPherson, the new MSP for the Forth Ward.
Those present took the opportunity to raise a number of issues with Ben including local policing, the lack of facilities for young people, difficulties getting through to the local office, the poor condition of roads and pavements in the ward and irresponsible parking on pavements which is causing a hazard to pedestrians.
There was also a lengthy discussion about a proposal supported by many local groups to introduce a tourist tax to help fund infrastructure projects in communities hardest hit by austerity cuts.
The second summer trip this summer will take place on Wednesday 27 July.
We will be going to Glasgow to visit the award-winning Riverside Transport Museum and the Tall Ship which is berthed behind it (both fully accessible). Hopefully the weather will have improved by then so that we can have a picnic and a stroll along the River Clyde!
On Wednesday 10 August, we will be heading east through some of East Lothian’s beautiful coastal communities where we will visit a local heritage centre. If the weather is nice we will have a picnic at the seaside.
Our fourth visit on Tuesday 16 August, will take us to South Queensferry and then on to Linlithgow where we will visit Anette House museum and gardens and Linlithgow Loch.
Our final visit will take place on Tuesday 23 August when we will be heading to the Museum of Scottish Industrial Life in Lanarkshire. For those interested in social history, this museum is a must. As well as a huge array of interactive displays, there is a working tram, miners’ rows, Anderson shelter and a tour down the mine.
The bus will leave the centre at 9.45 am sharp for each of these trips and will return no later than 4 pm.
The demand for the trips is likely to be high so to avoid disappointment please book your seat in advance and complete our participants’ excursion form which provides us with important information such as any support needs you may have, medical conditions, emergency contacts, etc.
To celebrate the end of the summer term we will be having a community event in the centre which will take place on Thursday 25 August from 10 – 2.30 which everyone is welcome to attend. The event will include workshops, activities, lunch and a crèche.
