Lord Provost brrrrrrrrrrraves the waves!

Donald plunges into freezing Forth for charity

Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Donald Wilson took the plunge for charity yesterday when he braved the New Year’s Day Loony Dook challenge.

Part of the three day Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festival, the 30th anniversary of the Loony Dook event saw over 1,000 ‘Dookers’ – including the Lord Provost’s fellow city Councillor, Almond’s Alastair Shields – cheered on by 4,000 spectators. They entered 2016 with a dip in the bracing waters of the River Forth in the shadow of the world-famous Forth Bridges.

The event raises money for UNICEF, which provides vital funds for projects to protect children affected by disaster and conflict.

This was the civic leader Donald Wilson’s second ‘Dooking’ but the first of many charity challenges in 2016. His chilly start to the year continues next week with Edinburgh’s scenic Great Winter Run around Arthur’s Seat as he steps up his training and fundraising efforts for the Virgin Money London Marathon in April.

He said: “The event was absolutely freezing and a bonkers way to welcome in the New Year, but it has raised money for a fantastic charity and as the Admiral of the Firth of Forth, I’m really glad to show my support.

“It was a complete sell-out and it’s quite a sight to see 1,000 people, many of them in costume, make their way into the icy cold water! It’s also a great way to showcase the beauty of the area and South Queensferry’s business community, especially considering the recent festive impact of the bridge closure. I hope everyone who gave their support has a happy, healthy New Year.”

The Stoats Loony Dook is organised by Unique Events, who produce the three-day Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festival on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council. It is held with the sponsorship of Stoats Porridge and the support of EventScotland and Scotland’s Winter Festivals.
