Parliament celebrates Edinburgh students awarded top marks in Modern Studies

On Saturday the Parliament hosted the Modern Studies Association Annual Conference 2019, hosted by The Deputy Presiding Officer, Christine Grahame MSP.

Part of the day included presenting an SQA Advance Higher Award and SQA Higher Awards  for the most outstanding students in the country.

The winners were:

  • Olivia Cash, George Watson’s College, winner of the Advance Higher Award (Olivia is currently on Project Work in Senegal and her father Mike Cash received the award on her behalf (above)).

  • Joint winners of the Higher Award – Elizabeth Farr, St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School, East Kilbride; Sompura Banerjee, (known as Riya) Hutcheson’s Grammar School, Glasgow; and Rachel Fairley, (above) George Heriot’s School, Edinburgh.

The Advanced Higher Award is sponsored by Hodder & Stoughton publishers and is given to the student with the highest mark at advanced higher modern studies which is made up of an exam over three hours and a 5000-word dissertation.  The award is a cheque for £100 and a cup. 

The Higher Award is sponsored by Kirsty Wark and Alan Clements and is given to the students who achieved full marks in the higher exam.  The exam is out of 80 and an assignment marked out of 30.  This award is a cheque for £50 and a cup.  When there is more than one winner they all receive a £50 cheque and a cup.
