A message about the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People:
We are aware that a great number of people, companies and trusts have given us donations towards Edinburgh’s new Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, to fund an innovative programme of art and therapeutic design.
We would like to reassure everyone who contributed to the £3.1m that we have provided to the new hospital that these design enhancements are unaffected by the ongoing delays to the opening of the building.
Thanks to your incredible support, we have been able to transform the play, waiting, sitting and dining areas; treatment rooms; the Sanctuary; and the Child Protection Unit. We have created a multi-sensory room for the benefit of children in the neurological ward and spaces specifically for our teenage visitors.
We have enhanced the communal sitting and dining areas, as well as the bedrooms and outdoor courtyards in the Melville Unit for children and young people in mental health services.
We have boosted the outdoor spaces with planting and bespoke furniture; and provided wall graphics throughout the building to assist with wayfinding.
Every bedside has a free Smart TV and tablet, along with a library of digital content, and we have delivered over 40 projectors in treatment rooms to provide distraction during procedures. There are pull down beds at every bedside, so families and carers can sleep close by.
The Hub has been enhanced and will continue to support children, young people and their families in a non-clinical space away from wards, assisting with a range of holistic supports.
And we have created the Pod, one of the greatest outpatient waiting spaces in the world, which reimagines Edinburgh as you’ve never seen it before.
Your funding has created a space which provides a sense of welcome, reduces anxiety and engages children and young people in a positive way.
While we await the move to our new home, we will continue to run our daily Arts Programme which brings fun, magic and joy, at the current hospital at Sciennes.
Our Drop in Centre continues to support children, young people and families at some of the most difficult times, offering a home away from home and a weekly programme of workshops and activities.
Our support of the Play Team and the hospital volunteering programme continues, and our Grants Programme allows the incredible Sick Kids staff team to continue to bring innovative projects, services and equipment to the hospital.
We have another year to go in a building which has its challenges. We need your support now more than ever to transform the lives of children and young people in hospital, giving them a positive experience and enabling them to be a child first and a patient second.
