Entries open for Port of Leith’s Big Bake Off

Leithers and local bakeries sign up for community bake off in September

Port of Leith Housing Association has partnered with local businesses including social enterprise Breadshare Bakery, The Kilted Donut, Bakery Andante, Bad Tempered Baker and Mimi’s Bakehouse to host Leith’s Big Bake Off this autumn.

The free event takes place on Wednesday 4 September at 6.00pm in Thomas Morton Hall beside Leith Theatre. Hosted by Port of Leith Housing Association ahead of their 43rd Annual General Meeting, the bake off will bring together Leithers and local businesses for a sociable evening sampling the best cakes, bread and treats to come out of Leith.

There are six categories to enter and a seventh ‘Favourite Local Bakery’ category for Leith bakeries to give locals a taste of what they’re all about. The categories are: Best Baker (sponsored by Bakery Andante), Most Moreish (sponsored by The Kilted Donut), Best Under 16s (sponsored by Bad Tempered Baker), Best International Bake (sponsored by Port of Leith Housing Association), Best Healthier Bake (sponsored by Breadshare Bakery) and Showstopper (sponsored by the Edinburgh Tool Library).

Keith Anderson, Chief Executive of Port of Leith Housing Association, said: “Leith has a strong sense of community and our AGM format this year reflects this community spirit.

“I hope it will attract some new faces who are keen to hear about our work and to help us shape the future of Leith and north Edinburgh. I encourage all our tenants and Leithers to enter and look forward to sampling the best cake Leith has to offer on the night.”

Lena Wollan, Director and Co-Founder of The Kilted Donut, said: “Here at The Kilted Donut we are always looking for ways to get involved and support the local community.

“Leith’s Big Bake Off is a fantastic opportunity to bring the Leith community together, and what can do that better than cake! Good luck and get baking!”

Entries to the bake off close on Monday 2 September 2019.
