Fringe Review: Something About Simon

Singer-songwriter Paul Simon has been one of the most important musical artists of the last fifty years and his influential work has been brought to life in a show at Edinburgh’s George Square Assembly.

Garry Edward Jones’ Something About Simon lovingly tells the unique story of the ‘little guy from Noo Joisey’ who’s memorable songs have moved millions of fans worldwide over the years.

Garry tells the Paul Simon story not only through those wonderful songs but using anecdotes that shed light on the background to those songs. He talks engagingly, too, about the influences and the big characters who had such an impact on Simon: early love and inspiration Kathy Chitty, Carrie Fisher and, of course, Art Garfunkel.

From opener The Sound of Silence to Wristband, which closes the show, Garry’s warmth and his respect for his subject shone through and was clearly appreciated by the packed audience. And those wonderful songs … the autobiographical The Boxer and, inevitably, Bridge Over Troubled Water were highlights but this was a polished performance throughout.

Coming on to the stage to warm applause, Garry Edward Jones quipped: “You ‘aven’t ‘eard me yet!” We have now – and you were very, very good.
