A man has been charged following a fatal road collision at the Maybury Roundabout in which local man Jonny Smith was killed.
The incident happened during the early hours of Friday 25th May 2018, after a BMW X5 was involved in a collision with a Peugeot 206.
As a result of inquiries conducted by Corstorphine CID, a 26-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday (7th August) and appeared from custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday.
Ednilson Ceita was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, fraud, attempting to pervert the court of justice and an alleged contravention of the Identity Documents Act 2010.
He also made no plea or declaration to the charges and was granted bail. He will appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date.
Police Scotland is continuing to liaise with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service in relation to any further charges, which may be brought against other individuals.
Detective Chief Inspector Graham Grant from Edinburgh CID said: “This has been a very complex investigation where we have worked to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision and the roles of any and all vehicles involved.
“I would like to thank all of those who have come forward over the past 14 months to provide us with information to assist our inquiries.
“While one man will now appear in court in connection with this incident, we will be maintaining our dialogue with our partners at the Crown Office in respect of any further action that may be required.”
In a statement issued last night the Justice for Johnny campaign said: “As most of you may be already aware an arrest was made yesterday and the BMW driver was charged and in court today.
“Its been a long 14 months, a lot of wòndering and worrying, Im happy that we can finally get some justice, and the person who took our Jonny can be held responsible.
“I suppose you could call it good news or a step in the right direction: it won’t bring him back but at least he will know that he is getting his Justice!!!
“We want to say a huge thank you to Police scotland and our liasion officer, we know how hard you’s have worked in the last 14 months and it is truly appreciated!
“So it begins. The punishment will never fit the crime but I hope if there is a way he can feel a shed of the pain that we do every minute of every day then maybe thats something.”
