Searching for Scotland’s young engineers

The Smallpeice Trust has partnered with world leading engineering companies to create a series of engineering experience courses at four locations in the UK.

Edinburgh Napier University has been chosen as one of the locations that will host a unique three-day summer time residential course, offering students aged 12-13 (S2 and S3) the chance to ignite their passion for engineering.

The course offers one hundred, S2 and S3 students an opportunity to explore the subject of engineering through a series of real-life challenges. Competing in teams, students work with young role model engineers who will guide them through every stage of product development, from initial concepts to final testing.

Alongside the fun of challenging themselves by working with some of the country’s top minds,  that have previously included First Group and Rolls Royce, those that attend the course will have the opportunity to spend three days with their peers in university accommodation under the watchful supervision of Smallpeice staff, offering a real glimpse into campus life for those considering university.

Dr. Kevin Stenson, Chief Executive of The Smallpeice Trust, said: “For over 50 years The Trust’s courses have enabled young people from all walks of life to imagine not only their future study and career paths, but imagine what the world will be like for future generations – and what part they might play in creating it.

“Over that time, we’ve learned a lot about the kinds of abilities that young people have and how to deliver a programmethat excites, inspires and creates change – which is perhaps why some of the world’s most recognisable and innovative brands have chosen to be part of these courses.”

Dr Stenson continued: “What has been amazing for us is that we’ve seen people that have attended our courses go on to change the world after being inspired by The Smallpeice Trust. Our courses are a great way to let young people get hands on with science an engineering and discover what’s possible.”
