SCOTTISH men claim they will spend more than four times as much on presents for their partners as women this Christmas. Men in Scotland say they will spend an average of £588.92 on their other half, while women say they will spend an average of £113.63.
And thirteen per cent of men in Scotland say they have left it until Christmas DAY itself to buy a gift for their loved one – compared to 10% of women, according to research for Virgin Experience Days.
Half (50%) of men who have bought a gift on December 25th have nipped out to a local shop, while the other half say they have gone online.
Liam Howard-Jones, Virgin Experience Days Head of Marketing, said: “Christmas can be an incredibly intense time of year, so it is no wonder some people leave it until AFTER the last minute to finish their shopping.
“And there is a danger that loved ones will feel like an afterthought if they realise their present has been bought on December 25th.
“But it doesn’t need to be this way – with just a little thought you can still buy the special person in your life a terrific present – even though you don’t start looking until after midnight on Christmas Eve.”
Three in ten (29%) people surveyed in Scotland who said they had gone shopping on Christmas Day said they had put off buying anything until the last minute or had simply forgotten to buy anything.
The most generous men in the UK are in the north-east where they say they spend an average of £614.82 on their partners, while the least likely to splash out are men in the eastern region, with an average spend of £136.08.
The most generous women are in London, where they spend an average of £298.33, while the least generous are in Scotland, where they say they fork out an average of £113.63 on their partners.
Mr Howard-Jones said: “The fact that millions of Brits leave buying friends, relatives and partners presents until Christmas Day shows how time pressured our lives have become.
“In the world of 24-hour access to work emails and social media, it is easy to waste valuable time that could otherwise be spent together.
“The shift in consumer spending from physical gifts to experiences to enjoy together shows a desire to spend more time together.”
