NHS 24 is issuing advice to keep people in Scotland safe and well during the winter period.
As we approach another Scottish winter, the icy cold conditions of the ‘Beast from the East’ are fresh in our minds. Older people and those with particular conditions will need to be prepared for low temperatures.
Dr Laura Ryan, NHS 24’s Medical Director, explained: “Although many people will be wishing for a white Christmas, very cold weather is particularly risky for over 65s, those with long-term health conditions, very young children and pregnant women.
“When the temperature drops below 8C, there is an increased risk of some people suffering from: heart attack, stroke, flu, pneumonia, falls and injuries and hypothermia.”
Dr Ryan is asking the public to follow some practical tips.
She said: “Keep warm with hot drinks and hot food. Dress in layers and wear a hat, gloves, and scarf when outside. Aim to keep your home between 18C and 21C (or 64F and 70F degrees). The Scottish Government can offer certain groups such as older people financial support with keeping their homes warm.
“It’s also important to stay active. Although you may feel like curling up on the sofa, wrapping up warm and going for a brisk walk instead can do you the world of good.”
Dr Ryan’s advice is part of the NHS Scotland ‘Be Health-Wise this Winter’ campaign, which is designed to encourage people to be prepared for common seasonal illnesses ahead of the festive holidays,
Dr Ryan said: “A few simple steps can help people stay well over Christmas and New Year when opening times may vary. Check your GP and local pharmacy surgery opening times. Don’t run out of your repeat prescription, order only what you will need and in plenty of time, and be prepared for common illnesses by checking you have enough remedies at home.”
“If you know someone who lives alone, an older neighbour or relative with a long-term condition, get in touch with them and ask if there is anything they need. This is especially important during cold snaps.”
