Our Money, Our Projects, Our Leith

£eithChooses, Leith’s long-established participatory budgeting event, is in full swing once more.  In this, its ninth year, it seeks to address inequalities in Leith, an area where up to 16% of the population face one or more forms of deprivation, including poverty.

To help address this, £eithChooses will this year give an opportunity to help redress that balance. Edinburgh Council has devoted £44,000 for groups and organisations tackling inequality in Leith, specifically around food and supporting vulnerable people. £eithChooses 2018-19 was launched at Leith Community Education Centre at 6pm on Tuesday 20 November.

In previous years, £eithChooses has allocated Council and Scottish Government funds to many groups supporting vulnerable people in Leith. But £eithChooses isn’t just a hand-out, it’s a community event in which Leithers themselves vote on how the money is allocated, and which projects are supported.

This community choice makes sure that funds go where they are most needed, and builds community strength. This year £eithChooses has a special ‘boost’ to help promote projects that support ethnic minorities.

£eithChooses’ voting event, where all Leithers are welcome, brings together voters and applicants offering a chance to meet, talk and enjoy the diversity of our unique community. The event will be at the Leith Community Education Centre in the Kirkgate on 23 February 2019.

Groups applying for £eithChooses funding can get advice and at special support events: Tuesday 11 December 2018 and Tuesday 15 January 2019, both 3pm to 8pm at the Nelson Hall, McDonald Road library.
