Scots are to be armed with a new tool to equip them with the digital know-how and best practice on how to tackle cyber crime. To coincide with Safer Internet Day 2018, the Scottish Business Resilience Centre (SBRC) has revised its hugely successful cyber safety factsheets which aim to provide individuals and businesses with enhanced guidance to thwart e-crime.
First launched in 2016, the factsheets were inspired following a Cifas report which highlighted that social media networks were becoming the feeding ground for cyber criminals, who were using the networks to accumulate as much easily gathered information about businesses and individuals as possible.
Keen to keep up with the ever changing online landscape, SBRC decided to update its original factsheets covering topics such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat and even public WiFi usage.
The downloadable factsheets provide easy to understand, at-a-glance guides for anyone interested in keeping private information out the hands of fraudsters, while on the internet or using popular social media channels.
Gerry Grant, Chief Ethical Hacker at SBRC, said: “With the first factsheets in 2016 it was important that we left out all the jargon and kept the sheets simple and easy to understand. This has been replicated with the 15 updated sheets and includes real actionable tips and advice.
“Sadly, there is still a lot of complacency around staying safe online.
“Social media is a wonderful tool and the last thing we want to do it put people off using it. Instead we hope that people can equip themselves with the essentials to ensure they stay safe while online without interfering with their enjoyment.
“By completing small crucial steps to improve your online security, it can result in keeping your information safe and protecting you against people trying to steal your identity, raid your bank accounts or even posting malicious comments in your name.”
The factsheets tie in with SBRC’s ethical hacking programme that seeks to inform businesses and individuals about the dangers cyber criminals pose and how they can best protect themselves against these threats.
