The day a team died: Munich remembered sixty years on

Football world will never forget the original Busby Babes

The Munich air disaster took place on 6 February 1958 when BEA Flight 609 crashed at 3:04pm on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport in West Germany. A snowy, slushy day – just like today.

Eight members of the Manchester United team, the legendary “Busby Babes”, died alongside supporters, club officials, journalists and flight crew. Twenty-three people lost their lives.

Sixty years on, the horror of that day is still keenly felt not only in Manchester but in every country across the globe where football is played.

We can never know just how great that young Manchester United team would have become, but their names will be remembered as long as the game is played: club captain Roger Byrne, Geoff Bent, Eddie Colman, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam Whelan.

The football family will never forget you.
