Free Barker College concert at Canongate Kirk tomorrow

Barker College Choir and String Orchestra from Sydney, Australia, will perform in Edinburgh tomorrow (Monday) as part of their concert tour of the UK and France. They will be giving a Christmas concert at Canongate Kirk a 7:30pm (153 Canongate).  The concert is free of charge and everyone is welcome.

Their two-week tour includes concerts in Edinburgh, York, Cambridge, London and Paris.

This exciting young Chamber Orchestra and Choir will perform music from across the continents and centuries, to include music from the Baroque, the twentieth century and arrangements of traditional English and French carols.

They will perform works by Australian composers Percy Grainger, Paul Stanhope, Dan Walker and Malcolm Williamson as well as Grand Duo by Giovanni Bottesini for violin and double bass, String Quartet no 6 (Allegretto) by Dmitri Shostakovich and Concerto Grosso op 6 no 8 by Arcangelo Corelli. Christmas carols from around the world will include People Look East by Paul Stanhope, How Lovely Shines the Morning Star, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Confidando esta la noche by Mexican composer Juan Garcia de Zespedes and Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day by John Gardner.

Barker College from Sydney has one of the largest school music programs in Australia. It features a strong classroom program from the time students are age 4, through to their completion of school at the age of 18. More than one thousand young people who attend Barker are involved in the instrumental and choral programs offered.

The choirs and orchestras of Barker have an outstanding reputation for their work in the school, the community, in competitions and as international ambassadors for Barker.

Barker has a strong junior school music program and then students are attracted to join the Secondary School by the strength of its ensemble program, including many choirs, orchestras and concert bands. Every year sees a music tour from Barker leave Australian shores. In the last few years, music groups from Barker have performed in the USA, Turkey, Cuba and of course Europe.
