Lord Advocate to deliver fourth Chancellor Talk

SCOTLAND’S senior law officer will explore the concept of a free society in a public event at Edinburgh Napier University. Lord Advocate James Wolffe QC, head of the country’s prosecution system, is to deliver a talk entitled The Law, Democracy and Fundamental Rights.

His appearance at the Lindsay Stewart Lecture Theatre on the Craiglockhart campus on Wednesday 29 November is the fourth Chancellor Talk to take place at the university.

The series is the brainchild of the university’s Chancellor, David Eustace, who first attended the university in his late twenties and used his degree as a platform to build a career as an award-winning photographer and creative consultant.

Dr Eustace launched the events last year with the aim of giving students, staff and the wider community access to high-profile people whose talent and drive had “made a real difference to our world”.

Mr Wolffe was born in Dumfries and went to Kirkcudbright Academy, and Edinburgh and Oxford Universities.

In the course of his career as an advocate, he has argued important cases in court about human rights and constitutional law, including, last year, the Article 50 Brexit case in the UK Supreme Court.

He has also worked in the House of Lords, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union, and prosecuted serious criminal cases.

Dr Eustace said: “James Wolffe has a wealth of experience at the highest levels of the legal profession, and it will be fascinating to hear him and get the chance to question him about his thoughts on the foundations of a free society.”

Mr Wolffe will be at the Lindsay Stewart Lecture Theatre at the Craiglockhart Campus in Glenlockhart Road from 6.30-7.30pm on November 29. Doors open at 6pm, and the lecture will be followed by a Q and A and a reception in the main foyer.

The event is free to attend. However, attendance should be registered here

Earlier Chancellor Talks at Edinburgh Napier have featured legendary designer Milton Glaser, Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas and Polar explorer Ann Daniels.
