Parkinson’s UK salutes Scottish Great North Run fundraisers

Runners from Scotland were among over 300 people who took on the Great North Run for Parkinson’s UK on Sunday, raising thousands of pounds for the charity.

Heather McManns, 27, from Kelso, raised £500 in honour of her Nan. Helen completed the 13.1 mile challenge in 2 hours 28 minutes. Fergus Smith, 39, from Helensburgh completed the run in 2 hours 8 minutes. He was running for his Mum who has Parkinson’s and managed to raise £4,500.

Annette Rae, 46, managed to raise £351 for Parkinson’s UK and was running for her Mum. Annette completed the 13.1 mile run in 2 hours 2 minutes. Ros Shaw from Edinburgh (above) also took part in the run for her Mum and was able to raise £500. Ros completed the run in 2 hours 28 minutes.

Also running were Ricky Thorburn, 49 and Cath Dungund 42, from Dunbar who ran for their Father and Father- in-Law, managing to raise £2,000.

The Scottish entrants joined more than 300 other runners who were running to raise funds for research into Parkinson’s, a progressive neurological condition for which there is currently no cure.

The Parkinson’s UK team of runners aims to raise a combined £150,000 to support and accelerate Quality Services for Parkinson’s. Current Parkinson’s drugs don’t stop, slow down or reverse the condition – they only mask it for a time. Despite huge scientific progress, there have been no major advances in Parkinson’s treatments in the last decade.

Funds raised by the runners will help us deliver our commitment to enabling everyone with Parkinson’s, and their families, to be able to access high quality local services wherever they live. Good local services can make an enormous difference to people’s day-to-day lives and are highly valued by people affected by Parkinson’s.

Paul Jackson- Clark, Director of Fundraising at Parkinson’s UK, said: “I would like to thank the runners for their participation and running to support quality services for Parkinson’s and I hope their experience will inspire others to sign up to the run next year.”
