The search has begun for the eleventh recipient of the Edinburgh Award with nominations open now. Established in 2007, the Edinburgh Award is a way for the Capital’s citizens to pay a lasting tribute to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the city.
Past recipients include authors JK Rowling and Ian Rankin, scientist Professor Peter Higgs and fundraising champion Thomas Gilzean – each of whom has a cast of their handprints imprinted in flagstones in front of the Capital’s City Chambers.
Last year’s recipient, retired boxer Ken Buchanan [pictured] followed in the footsteps of Sir Chris Hoy and George Kerr OBE to be honoured with the Edinburgh Award for his sporting achievements.
Nominations are sought annually from communities, businesses and individuals across Edinburgh and the winner is selected by a panel chaired by the Lord Provost.
The Lord Provost, Frank Ross, said: “This is your chance to celebrate your city’s most inspirational citizens.
“The Edinburgh Award has been presented to 10 truly outstanding recipients over the years, from stars of sport and science to artists, authors and community champions.
“Our city really is proud of its people and this accolade recognises the achievements of our own. We need the people of Edinburgh to tell us – who should be next?”
Nominations can be made by post or online and must be received no later than Friday 1 September 2017.
The Edinburgh Award 2017 recipient will be presented with an engraved Loving Cup by the Lord Provost at a special ceremony and their handprints will be set in stone outside the City Chambers.
