Still smokin’ after all those years: Fags’n’Matches back at the Maybury!

Grosvenor Casino Edinburgh, located on South Maybury, is set to host the return of legendary local band Fags ‘n’ Matches, over fifty years after their first performance at the venue, which was known then as the Maybury Roadhouse.

The cabaret-style event, which takes place next Saturday (13th May), will see the band play a variety of iconic hits from the 60s and 70s. Formed in the mid-1960s, Fags ‘n’ Matches are best known for winning local talent competition Search for a Star in 1972. The grand prize sent the five-piece band on a glamorous Caribbean cruise and although the line-up has changed since winning, the name has always remained synonymous with the Maybury.

Colin Bellett, drummer, said “It’s such a pleasure for us to return to the Maybury. We were the resident band back in the 60s, before it became a casino, so we have a lot of fond memories of the place. The Grosvenor Casino staff have been really supportive and accommodating and we can’t thank them enough for bringing us back!”Tragically, the band lost original member and guitar player Jimmy Ackroyd to cancer last year.

Colin continued “It’s a fitting tribute to Jimmy’s memory to keep playing where we first performed as a band. We’re mostly retired now, so doing this keeps us busy and energised. We all love performing so much and we don’t let our age get in way of that!”

Original keyboard player Graeme Tosh has since moved to England but the current line-up still features three original members; Colin on drums, singer John Miller and bass player Roy Martin. Two new recruits joined the band recently, Dougie McQuillan on guitar and Eddie Logan on keys, to retain the five piece line-up.

Tom Docherty, General Manager at Grosvenor Casino Edinburgh commented: “While we’re best known for our gaming facilities, we always try to offer something for everyone.  We pride ourselves on hosting entertainment that we know our customers will enjoy and having a local band as iconic as Fags ‘n’ Matches return to where they began over fifty years ago is a true privilege.”
