Young people across Edinburgh are campaigning for votes to become Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs). The ballot will see 12 new Edinburgh Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament being elected from across six city constituencies.
The prospective candidates are urging the Capital’s young people to vote as online polls open for the 2017 Scottish Youth Parliament Elections.
The SYP is the democratically elected voice of Scotland’s young people and provides them with a national platform to discuss issues important to them and affect the change they wish to see.
Young people in Edinburgh aged between 12 and 25 can vote in the elections until Friday 17 March when the successful candidates will be announced at a special event in the City Chambers.
To get involved young people should go to www.elections.youngscot.org and use their Young Scot number to vote. Temporary numbers for voting are also available from a selection of schools and community venues across the city.
The Scottish Youth Parliament is a non-party political organisation made up of 150 young people representing every constituency in Scotland. It campaigns to highlight the views of the nation’s young people on a national and international stage.
Its members meet three times each year at a range of different locations, including in the main chamber at Holyrood’s Scottish Parliament.
Councillor Cammy Day, Education Convener for the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “The Scottish Youth Parliament offers a great opportunity for young people to be heard on both national and local issues and I would urge everyone eligible to cast their vote next week.
“It’s great that modern technology means our young people can vote online for their preferred candidate. These elections are a great opportunity to develop young people’s citizenship and debating skills as well as demonstrating democracy in action.
“The council is committed to involving young people fully in the life of our city, so they feel that Edinburgh is a place where they can really make a difference.”
