Youth decides in PB project

The city council has invited youth work projects to apply for funding from a total pot of £60,000 in the latest participatory budgeting project in the Capital.

The Communities and Families Youth Work Grant Programme allows groups to apply for grants of up to £10,000 each, to be spent on open-access, universal youth work  that will benefit young people aged from 11 up to 25 in Edinburgh. The youth work can be locally-based or city-wide .

Applications are now open and the deadline for submitting application packs is Friday 24 February at 3pm.

Young people will be playing a central role from start to finish in decision-making. Applications will be assessed by a team of young people supported by Council officers, and those meeting the required criteria will go forward to be voted on by  young people. It will be the combination of these two processes that will determine who is awarded funding.

Councillor Cammy Day, Convener of the Education, Children and Families Committee, said: “Participatory budget schemes have proven to be extremely popular in the past. This exercise will allow young people to have a direct say in how £60k of funding can be used to benefit them and their communities. I would encourage as many young people as possible to get involved and support projects that are important to them. I look forward to hearing what young people have to say.”

The Council has a track record over the past six years in the delivery of successful participatory budgeting (PB) initiatives such as £eith Decides, Youth Talk £ead the Change, Grant a Grand, and You Decide.
