Northern and Leith MSP urges Tories to protect human rights
In a debate in the Scottish Parliament this week SNP MSP Ben Macpherson called on the Scottish Tories not to bow to Theresa May on any proposals to scrap the Human Rights Act.
The debate discussed the reassurances that the Scottish Government have requested from the UK Government that it will not take any action that weakens or undermines participation in international human rights mechanisms. And the Edinburgh Northern and Leith MSP warned about the message that would be sent out if there is any weakening of human rights in this country – a country that helped draft the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR).
Ben Macpherson MSP went on to ask the Scottish Tories to “have the wisdom and good sense to oppose this damagingly separatist suggestion”, as he vowed to “always stand up for and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms – here in Scotland, on this island, around this continent and throughout the world.’
The MSP for Edinburgh Northern and Leith, said: “The protection and promotion of our human rights has been a long road forward, so why would we want to take a step backwards – especially when there is so much negativity already challenging progressive liberal values that took so many generations to gain?
“Repealing the Human Rights Act would be a momentous step backwards for this island, and for all those in harsher parts of the world who look to us for democratic leadership and inspiration in their struggles for equality and justice.
“Human Rights demonstrate our universal bonds, enshrine our equality and protect the rights of all, whether friends or enemies, in a true spirit of democracy – I will always stand up for them and welcome everyone who wishes to stand with me.”
