‘The final award for Our Space – voted for by the general public – at #MakingSpace2016 is won by … Muirhouse Avenue Play Space!’
The play space on Muirhouse Avenue has won the ‘Our Space’ category in the Making Space 2016 awards, which recognise well-designed spaces for children and young people. The Centipede Project’s entry came top of the public vote.
Where young people learn plays a huge part in how they learn. This is the philosophy behindMaking Space 2016, an international programme run by Children in Scotland, celebrating excellence in the design of places and spaces for children, young people and communities.
As part of the programme, part of this year’s prestigious Festival of Architecture in Scotland, submissions were sought for an international competition, looking for examples of places and spaces designed for and with children and young people, which demonstrated innovation – and our local amphitheatre project certainly did that!
The Muirhouse Avenue project, a real team effort and a fine example of partnership working, was developed by The Centipede Project and the Old Kirk Muirhouse Parish Church in partnership with North Edinburgh Arts and the city council. Teams from Community Action North and Tomorrow’s People and scores of volunteers rolled their sleeves up and got stuck in too!
The Centipede Project’s entry was up against some very strong competition (see below) and the win was a notable achievement. Helen Fisher attended the awards event in Glasgow on Wednesday and said she was ‘absolutely thrilled’ to hear that the Centipede Project’s entry had scooped top prize at the gala event.
