The search is on for the tenth recipient of the Edinburgh Award and nominations are now open.
Established in 2007, the Edinburgh Award is a way for Edinburgh citizens to pay a lasting tribute to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the city through their achievements.
Past recipients include authors JK Rowling and Ian Rankin, sports stars Sir Chris Hoy and George Kerr, scientist Professor Peter Higgs and fundraising champion Thomas Gilzean – each of whom has a cast of their handprints imprinted in flagstones in front of the Capital’s City Chambers. Last year’s recipient, philanthropist Sir Tom Farmer, had his handprints set in stone [pictured] and received the public honour for his charity work and achievements in business.
Nominations are sought annually from communities, businesses and individuals across Edinburgh and the winner is selected by a panel chaired by the Lord Provost.
The Lord Provost, Donald Wilson, said: “For 10 years now the Edinburgh Award has been celebrating the city’s truly outstanding individuals. The accolade has been given to charity champions, artists, authors, a scientist and stars of sport. We need you to tell us who should be next.
“What is so special about the accolade is that it is voted for by residents and anyone can be nominated. Everyone in Edinburgh has someone they think has made a lasting contribution to the city and deserves recognition so I urge you to nominate someone now.”
Nominations can be made by post or online and must be received no later than Friday 25 November
The Edinburgh Award 2016 recipient will be presented with an engraved Loving Cup by the Lord Provost at a ceremony early next year and their handprints will be set in stone outside the City Chambers.
