Academy students leave Leith for the Land of the Free

Edinburgh Northern and Leith MSP, Ben Macpherson visited Leith Academy today to wish pupils – Caitlin Munn, Katie Ewart, Liam Stobie and Morven MacKay – good luck with their two week internships within the current US presidential elections.

The two week trip will see the pupils assisting with the presidential campaign of Democrat candidate, Hilary Clinton, and the House and Senate campaigns of Republican candidates, Marco Rubio and Neal Dunn. They will also attend campaign school, learning about political communications, data management and field operations, as well as sharpening their own debating skills during nightly Dinner Debates.

This life changing trip follows the Leith Academy pupils winning a place on The Transformation Trust’s programme, Inspire US 2016- the only school from Scotland to do so. Ben Macpherson MSP was delighted to support the pupils when they came to the Scottish Parliament to present their proposal to the judging panel. The SNP MSP has said “It was great to meet up with them before they leave for the states on Saturday and present them with a Scottish Parliament gift to take with them on their trip.”

He added: “I am very pleased that ideas and talent from Leith Academy pupils have been recognised in this way, and that they have been given this wonderful opportunity as a result.

“The pupils winning project, to get more 16 and 17 year olds registered for our council elections next year is brilliant, and it’s particularly great to hear that the campaign school, on their trip, will include a voter registration session for the pupils.

“I wish I was going on the trip with them – I will be watching the results come in, thinking of Caitlin, Katie, Liam and Morven, right at the centre of this historic election. I can’t wait to meet up with them on their return and hear first hand the stories from the campaign.”
