Find treasure at StockFlea this weekend

We still have some stalls free but are keen to spread the word so we can get as many people coming in over the Saturday and Sunday. As well as Flea stuffs (vintage, music and sports memorabilia, bric a brac, furniture etc) we have crafts and cakes and bands. Music on Saturday is by Not Dead Yet and music on Sunday is by aspiring musicians from Broughton High School. There will be a £1 entry fee which will go towards the restoration on the building project.

Scots aim for recycling world record as part of a national week of action

recycle

Zero Waste Scotland is calling on competitive Scots to take part in an attempt to set an official Guinness World Record for recycling, as part of a national week to encourage people to recycle more things, more often.

The record attempt – which will be for the fastest sort of 200 mixed items into recycling containers – is one of a whole host of action and events taking place across Scotland during Recycle Week, from 12 – 18 September.

Recycle Week encourages people to get savvy with their waste and find out how they can pick up and perfect their recycling habits.

Scotland’s household recycling rate is almost 43%, which is a great achievement, but we need to do more to reach the national target of recycling 70% by 2025.  By recycling properly, Scots are saving money, helping create jobs, conserving energy and protecting Scotland’s natural environment.

The record attempt, open to the public, will take place at St Enoch Centre in Glasgow on Saturday, 10 September.  Further events throughout the country can be found at recycleforscotland.com

Iain Gulland, Chief Executive, Zero Waste Scotland, said: “After medals and records galore at Rio’s Olympics, we decided that this Recycle Week we wanted to give Scots the opportunity to be recycling record breakers. By being the best recyclers we can, we help to preserve Scotland’s environment, tackle climate change and help our economy. Recycle Week is a chance for everyone to brush up on recycling and find out how else they can do their bit.”

Recycle Week 2016 – Top Tips

• Empty shampoo bottles, aerosol cans, toothpaste boxes and toilet rolls can all be recycled, so make sure to include a small recycling bin or bag in your bathroom.
• If you are not sure what can be recycled in your area use the postcode locator on the recycle for Scotland website to find out what you can recycle www.recycleforscotland.org.uk
• Have a clear out and make sure your unloved, working items go to good use (your local recycling centre can help or call the national Re-use line on 0800 0665 820 to have large re-usable items collected for free)
• All your plastic bottles can be recycled, from ketchup to pop bottles, bleach bottles and mouth wash – give them a quick rinse and squash for more space in your recycling bin.

Fast facts

  • Recycling all of Scotland’s food waste would produce enough energy to power a city the size of Inverness
  • Recycling is worth the effort and has a value:
    • If we all recycled just one drinks can every week Scottish councils would save £3 million a year;
    • Putting all of our used teabags in a food waste caddy will save almost £550,000 in landfill tax;
    • If we all recycled just one clear glass bottle every week, we’d save almost £3 million a year;
    • If we all recycled one mobile phone this year we would save 130 kg of gold with a value of over £4 million.
  • We currently send nearly 3 million tonnes of waste to landfill every year. This costs us £150 million in landfill tax

Scots can follow Recycle Week activity and share messages throughout the week on the Recycle for Scotland Facebook page or using the #RecycleWeekScot on Twitter.

Green MSPs offer support on welfare policies

AlisonJohnstoneMSP

Green MSP Alison Johnstone has written to the First Minister offering support for the Scottish Government to adopt progressive welfare policies using powers newly devolved to Holyrood.

Ms Johnstone has also asked for an update on the government’s implementation of the Scottish Greens’ policy pledge for a Young Carer Allowance.

Lothian MSP Alison Johnstone said: “As of this week, Holyrood will be able to create entirely new benefits and also to top-up the value of benefits that are reserved, such as Jobseeker’s Allowance. The Scottish Government has made a promising start, particularly in correcting some of the blind spots of the current system by pledging to create new benefits. Shortly after the election earlier this year, the First Minister pledged to consider the Scottish Green Party election pledge of a Young Carer Allowance.

“It’s important the Scottish Government continues to explore the possibilities of the new powers. Whilst these proposals for new benefits are very welcome, it is the benefit top-up powers that present one of the most exciting opportunities for Scotland to chart a different, fairer course in social security.

“For years, both the Scottish Government and the Scottish Greens have criticised the UK government for cutting support for those most in need. Up until now, that’s all that we’ve been able to do: criticise. But from today, we can do something about it.

“Whether by out-and-out cuts like the shameful impending £30 reduction to Employment Support Allowance, or by secretive changes to the way rates are calculated, we no longer have to accept that Scots will be worse off.”

In August, the Scottish Greens published a report showing that 13,000 people a year could soon face benefit sanctions through employment programmes devolved to Scotland. The party also launched a petition calling for a new welfare system in Scotland that eliminates the need for sanctions.

Friends of Granton Castle Walled Garden: deputation to Petitions Committee today

garden-aerial

Hi, Friends group members and supporters,

Recent meetings and discussions with architects developing new plans for Granton’s Waterfront have gone really well, with fresh hope for the walled gardens future restoration instead of another housing development. The timescale we have before the developers make a choice determining the gardens future use is short – 5th October Senior Management team meeting.
The council owned developers Waterfront Edinburgh Limited have until now insisted on housing in the garden as the best option, but we have been invited to make a presentation to show a viable horticultural alternative!
The garden is quite overgrown and neglected now as many aerial shots display (see above), but we feel it has great potential and a unique history as the oldest structure on Granton’s Waterfront. Who knows what archaeology lies hidden beneath its rich soil?
Our committee decided at the end of August monthly meeting to take action quickly and focus our efforts.
We now have cross party support from local MSP’s, community councils, many local community groups and other expert organisations for the safeguarding of the walled garden from unnecessary housing development. Follow the link below from the wordpress site displays some of the images from the last month, recent meetings and unexpected breaking news this week.
The petitions committee meets TODAY at 2pm in the City Chambers: we hope to represent the views of the Friends Group members and supporters despite the short notice given of the petition hearing tomorrow.
Below is the outline plan we have drafted showing the possible uses of the 2 acre garden. Outline design below is based on the survey results from the Friends Group ideas questionnaire, the topography, aspect and historic features of the walled garden.

Our committee had an enthusiastic emergency meeting last week led by Ellie to draft the survey ideas into an outline plan for the restored garden. We hope this news finds you well and that more positive news and future events will follow.
As ever please get in touch if you would like to attend our monthly meetings, or weekly community gardening dropins. Feel free to pop by the city chambers today at 2pm if you have the time – moral support and some positive energy welcome!
Next Friends Group meeting likely to be at the end of Sept, date, time and venue tba
Best wishes,
Kirsty Sutherland
