Work has begun on the next stage of a major project to improve Leith Walk. Phase Four of the Leith Programme, between Pilrig Street and McDonald Road is now under way in September and will last around ten months. Contractors Land Engineering Ltd are now on site, with construction expected to end in summer 2017.
Transport Convener, Councillor Lesley Hinds, said: “We are pleased with the progress of the Leith Programme so far, which has made great improvements to the streetscape for residents, visitors and businesses.
“As we reach phase four of the project, we will continue to strive to keep noise and disruption to a minimum, and thank the public for their patience throughout the process.”
Improvements include the introduction of dedicated off road cycle lanes, as part of a design that will take into account the potential for extending the city’s tram line to Leith. Early enabling works have been incorporated to ensure minimum disruption should the decision to extend be taken in 2017.
Limited surveying and investigative work will also take place at the Bernard Street and Constitution Street junction as part of this, beginning on 5 September. All roads will remain open during the works, with traffic management in operation to reduce disruption.
