Local twirlers fly the flag for Scotland

Megan and Chloe

TWO local young women will fly the flag for Scotland when they take part in the World Baton Twirling championships in Helsingborg, Sweden next week – and they’ll carry the support of both local MSP Ben Macpherson and the Scottish Parliament!

Edinburgh Twirling Academy leader Claire Dobson explained: “Megan Stewart(18) and Chloe Stevens (17) both live in the Crewe area and attend Edinburgh College Telford campus, where they are studying dance.  Both are dedicated and hardworking and they have twirled from a young age.

“Megan and Chloe have multiple champion titles for twirling and are current national title holders. We are really looking forward to the competition and are delighted to have the support of Ben and the Scottish Parliament.”

The young women’s achievements have attracted the attention of their local parliamentarian.

Edinburgh Northern and Leith MSP Ben Macpherson said: “I am very happy for Megan Stewart and Chloe Stevens. This is a great achievement to be selected as part of a squad of 10 that will represent Scotland at the World Baton Twirling Championships in Helsingborg, Sweden later this month.

“It shows their commitment, dedication and love for the sport, and is a testament to the high standard of training that Edinburgh Twirling Academy provides. I wish the girls and the Scottish team all the very best for the competition.”

The MSP, who was elected in May, lodged a Motion – ‘Edinburgh Twirling Academy’ – at Holyrood on 22 July. It reads:

That the Parliament congratulates Megan Stewart and Chloe Stevens on being selected as part of a squad of 10 that will represent Scotland at the World Baton Twirling Championships in Helsingborg, Sweden in August 2016; notes that Megan and Chloe, who train at the Edinburgh Twirling Academy in the West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre, will participate in individual, pair and team events at the international competition; appreciates that this selection reflects their commitment and dedication and the high standard of training in gymnastics, dance and twirling that the academy provides, and wishes Megan and Chloe all the very best for the competition.

And so say all of us! Good luck, Megan and Chloe!
