History Hunters roam wild this weekend

Historic Environment Scotland have challenged a group of top travel bloggers to visit as many historic sites as possible in just two days with the History Hunters challenge.

The Scotlanders are a group of writers dedicated to uncovering the best places to go in Scotland and sharing their tips online.  This weekend, they have split into three teams to travel across the country looking for the best historic haunts to visit – from castles to cairns, and from Duff House to Drumtroddan Standing Stones.

Members of the public are being asked to tweet historic visit suggestions to the group using the hashtag #HistoryHunters. The aim is to get Scotland’s history trending on Twitter over the weekend.

Lisa Robshaw, Marketing Manager at Historic Environment Scotland, said: “There are a lot of resources available to help the Scotlanders with their challenge, including our app, Movie Trail and other maps we’ve produced to help people follow in the footsteps of Mary Queen of Scots and the Outlander books. We’ve helped the team a bit by creating a special survival kit, which does include our Members’ Handbook – but it’s really up to them to uncover the best historic visitor spots for themselves.

“We’ll be cheering them on from the social media sidelines, but they’ll also be relying on members of the public to get involved by tweeting suggestions of the best places to visit, whether it’s a hidden gem such as Hailes Castle in East Lothian or a major but unmissable attraction like Urquhart Castle.”

Laura Brown (Laretour) and Patricia Cuni (Mad About Travel) will be covering the North of Scotland, Neil Robertson (Locomotion Scotland) and David Weinczok (The Castle Hunter) will be in the central belt, and Kay Gillespie (Chaotic Scot) and Nicola Holland (Funky Ellas Travel) will be in the Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway.
