Three shortlisted for Sainsbury’s Blackhall Charity of the Year

sby

It is the time of year again to choose the charity of the year for Sainsbury’s Blackhall! As valued customers and colleagues we would love for you to take part in this year’s vote for charity of the year (writes Gail Wilson).

This year’s contenders are three fantastic charities based in Edinburgh:

We have The Wi Rascals Young Carers who work with young people aged 5 to 16 years old who care for or are affected by someone else at home – usually a parent or sibling. The person they care for may suffer from mental health problems, disability, chronic ill-health or drug and alcohol misuse. The caring responsibilities can affect a young person emotionally, physically, socially, educationally and also financially. The Wi Rascals allows young carers to relax in a safe comfortable environment and also takes them out of their caring role and let them enjoy being a child by taking part in various activities.

The second of our charities is Health in Mind who promotes positive mental health and wellbeing in Scotland. Many of their services have been developed in direct response to demand from people who felt that their needs weren’t being met. Health in Mind provide support, respite and befriending services, as well as day services and counselling/talking therapies – face to face and on the telephone.

Last but not least, we have Red Dot Radio. They are a hospital radio station based in Edinburgh and are run entirely by volunteers. The radio station broadcasts to patients in Edinburgh Hospitals between 7-10pm every night of the week. Red Dot Radio provides entertainment, education and information for patients and staff in hospitals. Volunteers visit wards daily to collect requests from patients so that they can be played that evening.

Voting begins in store and online on 13 June and is live until 26 June.

We look forward to getting all the results in and revealing the Charity of the Year.
