IMAGINATE festival opens with free Fringe weekend

Free fun for children this weekend

Imaginate Festival Launch Large credit Jassy Earl

Imaginate – Edinburgh’s international children’s festival – opens tomorrow (Saturday) with a special Family Fringe weekend at the National Museum of Scotland featuring free performances and drop-in activities all day including live music, storytelling, hands-on arts and more!

Special highlights include superheroes costume making, puppet-led yoga sessions and Sprog Rock, a concert for 2-5 year olds. And for those who are up for a time travelling adventure, don’t miss Tales of a Grandson (7+), a humorous re-make of Scotland’s history by storyteller Andy Cannon – a great family show that will particularly appeal to grandparents.

Imaginate Festival will then run until 5 June in various venues across Edinburgh, including our own local North Edinburgh Arts (see below).

This year’s programme, brimming with magic, sounds and colours from all over the world, is sure to inspire and delight both the young and young-at-heart. With 14 shows from 9 different countries, the festival is recognised as one of the best places for international programmers to find new acts of the very highest standard.

Highlights this year include spellbinding shows such as The Great Illusionist (8+), the story of a boy who decides to be a magician, featuring fantastic illusions and magic tricks; The Story of the Little Gentleman (4+), a heart-warming show about a lonely man who befriends a curious dog (above); Go Get ‘em Kid (6+), a high-energy toe-tapping dance piece filled with humour and flying t-shirts; and Fluff: A Story of Lost Toys (4+), the hilarious and colourful story of a family who travel the world rescuing misplaced handmade toys.

Incoming Imaginate Festival Director Noel Jordan said: “Imaginate Festival offers children, their teachers and families a feast of international performances for all ages and taste. We have hand-picked shows from all over the world to ensure audiences experience some of the most exciting and innovative theatre and dance on offer.

“This is what Imaginate is all about: Supporting and developing theatre and dance for children of the highest standard. Ensuring children in Scotland have access to experiences as good as, if not better, than what is on offer for adults. Respecting children in their own right as the people and audiences they are now, not the people they will become.”

Janet Archer, CEO, Creative Scotland said: “Imaginate Festival has a fantastic tradition of creating an exciting and inspiring world for children of all ages to explore and this year is no exception.  The addition of the free family fringe event makes this year’s festival even more accessible and continues the important work that Imaginate has carried out for over two decades, making it possible for children from all backgrounds to enjoy theatre and dance made especially for them stimulating creativity and confidence through learning about new things.”
