I kid you not: it’s Sun Awareness Week!

PEOPLE in Scotland are being urged to stay safe in the sun, as part of Sun Awareness Week (May 9-15).

With the prospect of longer, warmer days ahead, people throughout the country will be spending more time outdoors. NHS 24, Scotland’s national telehealth and telecare service, is giving people pointers to enjoy the  sun as  safely as possible.

NHS 24 Medical Director, Professor George Crooks, says that by taking a few simple precautions, people can ensure they make the most of the sun  without  causing any  harm to their skin.

He said: “It might not seem like it but it is actually quite easy to get sunburnt in Scotland . The strength of the sun can be very deceptive.

“We may not get the high temperatures or some other parts of the world but prolonged exposure can still result in painful sunburn and damage your skin, increasing your risk of skin cancer.

“Limit your exposure to direct sunlight and everyone should  apply  sunscreen regularly. Some groups e.g. children and fair skinned people  need  very  high factor sunscreen applied to any exposed skin. Finally, stay hydrated in warm weather and keep plenty of water to hand.

“We all hope for some nice weather over the summer and taking these simple steps will mean everyone can enjoy the outdoors without any ill effects.”
