Mayday! Mayday! Support RNLI

The launches its national annual campaign tomorrow and the charity has set an ambitious target of raising £750,000.

The Mayday appeal runs until May Day (2 May), with street collections and fundraising events taking place across the country. The charity is encouraging people to show their support by using the hashtag #MaydayEveryday on social media, buying and wearing a Mayday yellow welly pin badge, hosting or supporting a fundraising event or donating online.

Many of the fundraising events have a yellow welly theme, in reference to the kit that the RNLI’s lifeboat crew members wear when they go out to sea. The money raised will support the RNLI’s work.

A range of activities will take place to raise awareness of Mayday and to encourage the public to support the RNLI, including paid for advertising on social media, digital display advertising and regional print and radio adverts.

Among the local events is a Fife Coastal Challenge on 7 May.

The challenge is to walk up to 14 miles, beginning at Leven Coastguard station and finishing at Kinghorn Lifeboat station, or starting at any of the other three start points for a shorter walk.

There will be stage start points at Leven Coastguard station, East Wemyss, Dysart, and Seafield, between 10am and 3pm, with the finish at Kinghorn Lifeboat Station. The whole route will be on the Fife Coastal Path, with stewards at each start point.

We will also have competition on the day for anyone who wishes to wear fancy dress, and there will be a treasure hunt along the route for younger walkers

Registration/sponsorship forms and further information is available at at www.kinghorn.org.uk

An RNLI spokesperson explained: “Mayday is our biggest fundraising event of the year, where we celebrate and give thanks to our crews who put their lives on hold to save lives at sea. This Mayday we need people like you to show your support and fundraise or volunteer for us.

“Last year our lifeboat crews rescued 7,973 people across the UK and Republic of Ireland. That’s an average of 22 people a day. Raising funds this Mayday will help train and equip our volunteers so they’re always there for those in need.”
