Craigroyston Community Centre faces closure – again

Community annexe at High School under threat

Members of Craigroyston Community High School’s Community Centre management committee have e-mailed politicians to seek support to save the school’s community wing.

Chairperson Vanessa Cousins told local councillors: “I would like to draw your attention to present events happening at Craigroyston Community Centre, where our space is under threat from the School and things could be changing as fast as June 2016.”

It’s exactly a year since Craigroyston’s adult students lobbied successfully when daytime Adult Education classes came under threat at the Community High School – and it seems they are now being forced to take up the fight once again.

Now, the community centre – the section of the school set aside for adult education – is under threat again as it’s understood that school management expect Craigroyston’s school roll to increase when the new school year starts after the summer holidays, and that more classrooms will be needed.

Ms Cousins is also to request a meeting with education representatives to discuss matters further.

Despite community protests the original Craigroyston Community Centre was closed (above) in September 2006 as part of regeneration plans. Following community pressure, a ‘community centre’ – an area for adult education and community use – was included in the new Craigroyston Community High School building when it relocated to the foot of Pennywell Road in 2009.

FROM THIS TO THIS IN SUCH A SHORT TIME
