Crerar Hotels Trust has donated £3,000 to St Columba’s Hospice to fund a specialist bed at the charity’s inpatient unit in Edinburgh. The support was celebrated during a special cheque presentation from Sarah Firth, on behalf of Crerar Hotels Trust to St Columba’s Hospice.
The grant from Crerar Hotels Trust will be used to purchase a specialist bed and mattresses for the inpatient unit at the Hospice.
Barbara Brockie, Trust Fundraiser at St Columba’s Hospice, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the kind donation from the Crerar Hotels Trust as we are able to buy a specialist bed and mattress for the Hospice. Sometimes patients can be quite anxious when they are admitted to the Hospice, and these new beds will help to ensure they can enjoy a good night’s sleep.”
She continued: “These beds are excellent for patients with a range of complex healthcare needs as they are designed to provide safe patient mobilisation, which is crucial for many patients who no longer have the strength to manoeuvre themselves comfortably. The specialist mattress perform in the same way as air mattresses without having the necessity to use an air pump.
“They help with the prevention of bed sores and use memory foam to mould patients’ bodies to offer the best comfort possible. We are delighted that the Trust has been able to support the Hospice so that we can provide comfort to our patients.”

St Columba’s Hospice provides a multi-disciplinary approach to care for patients. As well as care given by nurses and doctors, the Hospice offers physiotherapy, occupational therapy, spiritual care and counselling.
St Columba’s Hospice, Edinburgh, was Scotland’s first modern hospice, and opened its doors to patients and their families in 1977 as a 15 bed unit in Challenger Lodge, which is still part of the Hospice.
Today the Hospice has a 30 bed inpatient unit, plus a Day Hospice service, an extensive Community Palliative Care Service to care for people in their own homes, a medical outpatient unit and a dedicated education and research team whose reach extends across Scotland and beyond.
