City celebrates 100th ECOSTARS member
Councillor Lesley Hinds presented Mike Robertson, Transport Manager of George Anderson & Sons with an inscribed glass plaque, to mark their status as the 100th Member of ECOSTARS Edinburgh.
Local produce distributor George Anderson & Sons were honoured for their green credentials at a presentation in Edinburgh yesterday.
The company are the 100th member to join the City of Edinburgh Council’s ECOStars Edinburgh scheme. Edinburgh was the first Scottish local authority to establish an ECOStars fleet recognition scheme. Since then seven further schemes have been set up by other Scottish local authorities.
George Anderson & Sons has been in operation for over 40 years. Now based in Macmerry East Lothian, they distribute food produce throughout Central Scotland. The company is committed to using local suppliers where possible, and in doing so limit their food miles and reduce their carbon footprint. They are joining ECOStars Edinburgh as a 3 star member and have recently acquired two new 7.5T EURO 6 vehicles.
Councillor Lesley Hinds, Transport and Environment Convener, presented Mike Robertson, Transport Manager of George Anderson & Son with an inscribed glass plaque to mark their status as the 100th member of ECOStars Edinburgh along with their 3* certificate.
She said: “I am delighted to be able to present this award to our 100th member of ECOSTARS Edinburgh. This highlights the enthusiasm and commitment of fleet operators in Edinburgh to reducing the environmental impact of their vehicles in the city.
“Edinburgh was the first local authority in Scotland to join the ECOSTARS project and this demonstrates our commitment to working with fleet operators to improve their environmental performance. We have tough air quality targets to meet in the next few years and so we need operators to work with us to help reduce the emissions that their vehicles generate. I am thrilled to be welcoming our 100th member and encourage all other operators to take action now to improve our city for future generations.”
Since its launch in January 2012, ECOSTARS Edinburgh has recruited members from the freight and passenger transport sectors whose fleets range in size from one vehicle to several hundred. Some members are national companies while others are locally based.
